Johnny Byrne. It proved we were going nowhere having missed out in the playoffs for the top flight. And sure enough we were relegated.

Wardy...........felt like the end of an era.
Lawrenson......money was so huge ( £900k ) that we all knew it had a big upside.
Saunders........just plain stupidity...obvious he had big potential.
Fozzy............left for less money to play in the top flight...fair play.
Case.............had more to give.
Zamora..........inevitable.

Just running through those names...how many would get in the present side? Answer....all of them. When I read posters on here extolling the virtues of Ashley Barnes, my mind thinks back to those halcyon days at the Goldstone. Wardy racing in on goal from 35-40 yards out and you knew he was going to score. Lawrenson, oozing class, carrying the ball out of defence and beating men in that languid, effortless style that eventually made him one of the best centre-backs in Europe. Stevens, so assured, so confident, destined for the top flight. Fozzie. Captain courageous. Rock-like. Nobby Horton, driving his men on like a demon, never settling for second-best. Always cajoling and looking for openings. Jimmy Case. What can I say...awesome...like a pocket-sized tank. Running through brick-walls and coming back for more. Scoring amazing goals. Danny Wilson, strong and calm. Mr. Reliable. Michael Robinson. Terrorised top-flight defences. Big, Strong..like a bull-dozer but with a good touch. High class.

At that stage of Ritchie's career I think Connor probably did better than he would have done. The Saunders/Connor partnership was pretty good I think.

Lawro '81...we were a comfortable top flight side, season after won last 4 to stay up, next relegation...never been the same since
