It was in the cupboard, i opened it, looked fine, I ate it. Then when I went to throw the box away I saw the date...

Fairy nuff. If you're still around this evening, I reckon that you'll have got away with it!

Seriously? You'll be just fine.

Whenever I feel a little peckish and look through the larder to nibble on something I always hope that I will find a meringue.
A more satisfying and tasty snack I have yet to find.

The dates are all rubbish - it's just 'best before' usually, not 'under no circumstances eat after this date'. I'm another 'if it looks and smells OK I'll eat it' person.

It does annoy me how stringent we are.

I was trying to rescue many tubs of pomegranate seeds from Tesco that a chap was putting on a trolley to take them away. A manager accosted me and said I couldn't buy them as their sell by date had expired.

I asked if I could have them and make a donation to one of their charities, but the official line was "We can't do that sir".

I asked if they composted them and apparently they do, but I'm not convinced.

As long as the OP didn't have anything hot with it like custard he will be ok.

I once ate a plum crumble that had been on a hot plate for 5 days.

Ad finally, discounted seafood products are best bought, kept a few days, then given to hitony.
