Everone is saying that 2016 has been the worst year ever for celebrity deaths, but is it simply the result of our 20th/21st century obsession with celebrity.

Certainly the numbers of musicians that were well known grew enormously through the 60s and 70s. There are probably more films, shows and actors now than there have ever been, and the numbers of famous sports stars are huge. Add to this the development of television as a significant form of entertainment together with publishing and the internet (and the celebrity culture asociated with all these).

I suspect that Andy Warhol is being proved right and the number of celebrity deaths is simply going to incease year on year

The point about the age of the 'Celebrity' starting in the 1960s is probably valid, so why was 2016 deemed to be so much worse than 2015 for celebrity deaths? Surely one year didn't make that much difference? I think it seems worse because so many big names bit the dust this year, and my own view was that for big stars 2016 was 'bad' and that 2017 will see a regression to a mean, i.e. a return to a 2015-type level.

However that depends on how you define 'celebrity'. If you're going to include everybody who picked up a guitar or appeared even fleetingly on TV then yes, I'm sure 2017 will be as bad as 2016. For really stellar names though I don't think it will be the same. Let's bounce this next year and see who's right!

I think you're right.

If only one of Prince, Bowie or George Michael had died this year it would have been massive news. All three is an anomaly.

Piss off 2016.

No coincidence that drugs was a big part of the lives that died recently of course...

Glenn Frey, George Martin(personally), Bowie, Prince, George Michael, Ali are all massive

Within there you have one of the top musicians and sportsman of all time. That's huge.

A quick google of 2015 and the "top" ones seem to be Cilla Black, Terry Pratchett and BB King. Obviously I don't mean to be harsh to the deceased.....but it's not quite the same as this year is it?

It's subjective though. If you are not huge on popular music much of it would pass you by.

And today we add to the list:

December 28 Debbie Reynolds, 84, Actress

As for the OP - I think it's not the overall volume that 2016 is going to be known for. It's the proportion of genuinely 'big' names that have died unexpectedly early. And, in particular, that in a few cases the news has broken in close waves. I've highlighted a few above that I think 2016 is going to be known for: in bold for those that really kicked us globally, underlined for those that particularly hit the UK, and in italics (edit: darn it, quote is all in italics ... in between *'s instead now) for those that hit the news harder than they otherwise might for reasons (eg Harper Lee being in the news for finally publishing a second book).

At the top, you have a triple-whammy. Frey probably would have been a footnote if it wasn't for how close on the losses of Bowie and Rickman the news broke. That basically sets the tone for the year. And now we close out the year in a similar manner: a spate of globally big names have passed. This last week or so has been horrible listening to the radio. Every time the news comes on and I hear a famous name mentioned my first thought is "not another one!" In between, the big names have been just frequent enough to keep this year in people's minds as being a "bad" year for big name celebrity deaths.

Was listening to Uckfield FM the other day. They were playing a Status Quo song when the news came in to them about Parfitt - and then obviously rapidly followed in the days following with George Michael (my earliest musical memory is Wham's "Wake me up before you go go" on TV), Liz Smith, Carrie Fisher, and this morning's news that Debbie Reynolds has followed her daughter.

There is a case about age because only 15 of that list (Excluding the Brazilian football team) are 60 and under.
