jonny.rainbow and I are spending a couple of days in Philadelphia at the end of the month.

NSC has some wise old owls with sage advice. Your recommendations on what to do and where to eat and drink will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Go to a Phillies match. They might boo Santa Claus and throw batteries at the players in the city of brotherly love.

You could see Independence Hall where Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin and John Adams authored the Declaration of Independence to some king who they accused of harassing them with taxes.

There is supposed to be a statue of Rocky Balboa at city hall.

Lincoln's funeral train (the "Lincoln Special") left Harrisburg on Saturday - April 22, 1865 at 11:15 AM and arrived at Philadelphia at Broad Street Station that afternoon at 4:30 PM. It was carried by hearse past a crowd of 85,000 people and was held in state in the Assembly Room in the east wing of Independence Hall. While there, it was escorted and guarded by a detail of 27 Naval and Military officers. That evening, a private viewing was arranged for honored guests of the mourners. The next day (Sunday - April 23, 1865) lines began forming at 5:00 AM. Over 300,000 mourners viewed the body - some waiting 5 hours just to see him. The Lincoln Special left Philadelphia's Kensington Station for New York City the next morning (Monday - April 24, 1865) at 4:00 A.M

Been there a few times and really like it. Like any big city there are a few dodgy areas to avoid but plenty of good places for food and drink as well as the usual tourist stuff. Lots of good craft beers and anything by Yards is worth a try.

By the seaside in West Somerset
Great downtown although some of the suburbs less friendly.
Do the indoor market and try a original Philly Cheesesteak and stop by the Amish diner stall for breakfast of Scrapple with an egg sunny side up - totally unique.

You could see the Liberty Bell. Very historic, even though it almost certainly wasn't rung on 4 July 1776. It's assumed myth-like status among the citizenry, as far as I can see mostly because it has a crack in it.

The Museum of Art is cracking, if that's your thing.

Delassandro's for the best Philly cheese steak. Cheap, and delicious. They even use cheese whizz rather than cheese in the traditional way. Don't think about what's in it, just eat it.

I think the Rocky statue is behind a school's gym hall now :)

Dallesandro's is great but a bit of a way out - I lived in Bala Cynwyd for a while so it was pretty much my local cheesesteak joint :)

The city hall tour is pretty good, even if they do bang on a bit about how Pennsylvania was the only state that had an accord with the Native Americans, rather than slaughtering them. Funnily enough you won't see many Natives so I'm not sure what happened to them despite the accord.

You definitely need to go to South Street, the end near the Delaware river rather than the Schuylkill river. Great place to explore in an evening, loads of bars, food places, mix of eclectic shops, obligatory mix of piercing and tattoo joints if you fancy a something to regret in the morning like I did. Got my bipolar pierced to impress a girl I was out with. Probably not worth it in the long term.

The rocky statue is lame dude :)

Go to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, run up the steps a la Rocky and then go in, go and see Sunflowers by VG. Awesome museum, free entry!

Just checked, it's no longer free :( it's $20!!

And the statue is back at the museum, just off from the bottom of the steps, so you can see both in one go :)

Get the ferry across to the USS New Jersey. That is worth a trip. Have stayed at the city hall Marriott a couple of times. Seen the phillies and the eagles play. We have a huge office there opposite the white hospital at 401.

Mostly a friendly place. Shopping at the king of Prussia mall is huge!

I can thoroughly recommend the Monk's Cafe, excellent bar, it was four years ago, but superb selection, great atmosphere, go for it.
