No, I am suggesting that it was never a problem before and there were plenty happy to do this and get paid to do this..this I have been told first hand...now if it was all about passenger safety, why create a situation where safety is worse now?

Unfortunately for you, the public aren't stupid enough to fall for the safety bollocks that you keep referring to! I

Because it's cheaper for the train companies to run a system without certain checks and balances in place.

You're still missing the overall picture - this is a dispute engineered by the government in order smash the unions. They've admitted that. Safety is merely another bit of collateral in the argument.

Which is why the SASTA middle managers have now given up trying to resolve the dispute, they know it is futile as it is a political driven agenda and nothing to do with DOO or Conductors . Scotrail settled the same dispute quickly and without much disruption as there was no government interference as the Scottish Parliament have no agenda bar a safe and reliable railway

I proved that the other day when I gave the RMT details to a guy so he could get all the paperwork and details of the case behind the dispute and of course he didn't bother. They would rather just sit and type their anti union spite and bile from behind the safety of their keyboards

Actually Ernest I asked YOU for the details as the the self appointed rail expert on NSC, but you declined to be forthcoming. You were then accused of having an attitude problem by others on here and you duly scuttled away with your tail between your legs.

I didn't scuttle anywhere, I gave you the details as you seemed to be interested in finding out the full facts but as usual you showed your true colours. You're just trolling a serious thread as you've found out online porn has made you impotent and you've now got too much time on your hands

As a commuter as well I'm seriously fed up with it too, but suggesting that somehow the conductors are at fault for working to their contract is making the railway unsafe is just pure idiocy and not a difference of opinion, which is why I guessed you were a troll ???

Families to support difficult to argue as earliest will be job losses is 4 years away .

Pride on work .... Maybe , although not much pride flying about when they are hiding when things go wrong (pre mess).

I'm with them and place this firmly with the government who so many on this board campaigned for . I'm just putting this out there so no need strong me up as its a discussion board to raise ideas

Absolutely this - the situation is beyond annoying for those of us that have no other option for getting to work, but [MENTION=1332]Deadly Danson[/MENTION] has provided insightful, balanced views from the 'inside' that, along with other info, has helped me understand where the vast majority of the blame lies for this clusterf*ck.

I think he is and I wish I hadn't been drawn in again cos I'm only making myself angry again.

Yes he is on a fishing trip and he is probably one of those people who can dissect somebody's job and find a reason why it can be replaced by a robot. A know-all that knows nothing of the rail industry. There is a reason the railway has it's own Rule Book (which Southern are quite happy to ride roughshod over) and it's very own by-laws.
The media do not help by constantly saying this is about who presses a button

Not really. How much your boss charges his clients / customers isn't necessarily your concern. Just because he might lower a price on a given piece of work doesn't follow he will cut your salary because of it. You have a contract that says you receive X,000 in pay, and nothing changes that.

Well the train prices are set at the beginning of the year and nothing changes that. If Southern make a **** ton of money they aren't going to suddenly lower their prices in the same way my company wouldn't. Sadly despite being privatised for a number of years the RMT can't and don't want to accept the private sector and how it functions. Which is hard for those of us who work in the private sector to have much sympathy for them when it's their actions that are causing us grief. I haven't had a pay rise in 3 years yet not once have I thought about going on strike

I don't support Blackpool or Charlton, but I do care about how their fans are treated. The railway staff know they're in a privileged position of not needing to pay for their train travel (though that was suspended briefly earlier this year), and do appreciate the aggravation paying customers are going through. They see it every day, and are being blamed for it.

I'm sorry but I can't buy that at all. It was an attempt to try and get rail users onside by saying they are fighting for their rights.....they aren't they are fighting for their jobs. I have no problem with that, but just say it.

On a certain level, Southern staff get the frontline grief from passengers pissed off at fare increases. Do they deserve that? Some - not many, but some - customers are fools who prefer to pick on the small guy.

I'm sure they do and no they don't deserve it after all they don't set the prices. But as with any role in any service industry ultimately the customer expects a service and if they don't feel they are getting value for money from that service then they have the right to moan and who ever is on the front line will get the brunt of it.

But in the long run - you're right, it is largely a waste of time as Southern / HMG will do what they want anyway.

At least we agree on that.
