Just looked it up and it was 74/5 season Carlisle topped the table but only after 3games and got relegated. Sorry about that.

Well it would if they got promoted the season referred to by the OP, given it's their only season in the top flight.

For some reason I've always remembered that Middlesboro, Luton and Carlisle all got promoted from the old second division (todays Championship) to the old first division (todays Premier) at the end of the 1973/74 season but I have no idea why. It is the only complete promotion or relegation statistic I remember of any year or any division. I don't even remember any complete relegation or promotion combinations in which Brighton were involved. I don't have any relation to either Middlesboro, Luton or Carlisle so why does that promotional triumvirate stick in my mind ? ???
It was the first season 3 teams were promoted to the first division. The seasons before it was 2.

As you have already looked this up, can you do confirm something for me? Was one of those 3 games away at Leicester City? I remember years ago going to Leicester vs Carlisle at Filbert Street (visiting relatives) and I recall being told they were 1st and 2nd in Division 1. This would help me date it.

It would have been quicker to google.

True :) I've found it was played on 31 August 1974 which ties in with it being within the first three games of the season, but I can't find anything about respective league positions at the time of the game.

Why don't you look up the Leicester results then?

It was the 5th game. Possibly the season started earlier to get the season finished before the World Cup 1974, particularly as there were numerous replays in cup matches.

I think after 9 games Carlisle where top then only won 2 more games all season.

Could be wro g again though!

Careful with stats about teams topping the league after nine games....

Most people's memories tend to move to a fuller level around the age of seven. It's quite common for that to be the age that people remember watching their first FA Cup Final.

How old were you ?

By the end of the season in 1974 I was12.
The first FA Cup I remember watching was Leeds 1 v Arsenal 0 in 1972. I was 10
My most memorable FA Cup final was Sunderland 1 v Leeds 0 in 1973. I was 11
For some reason I remember this more vividly than the Brighton one. I remember I hadn't even heard of Sunderland until the day before the match when my mate told me who Leeds were playing. They used to do a great prematch build up in those days starting about midday with loads of profiles on the players and background on the clubs. I still remember Bob Stokoe in his raincoat and trilby (Mgr), Jim Montgomery, Billy Hughes, Ian Porterfield, Bobby Kerr, Dave Watson and Dennis Tuert.
I loved that match, Montgomerys brilliant double save really sticks out and still would even if it hadn't been replayed dozens of times. Since then I always had a soft spot for Sunderland and always wanted them to do well until Poyet and Bridcutt spoiled it all for me.

The first FA Cup Final I remember was Manchester United v Southampton. That was unforgettable.

Whenever I see mention of that Carlisle shock achievement, I think of Eddie Spearritt being in their team.
In those days it was a rare exanple of a player leaving Brighton to play at a higher level. Usually it was the other way round - players dropping down a level or two to play for us for a season or so before retiring, with mixed success.

Berty Lutton. Not a patch on the likes of Kit Napier but for some reason West Ham bought him and played him.
