Chancellor forced to back down on NIC increase for self-employed

Been put across the PM's knee and given a damn good thrashing!

From BBC

Plans to increase National Insurance levels for self-employed people - announced in the Budget last week - have been dropped.

Chancellor Philip Hammond has said the government will not proceed with the increases which were criticised for breaking a 2015 manifesto pledge.

In a letter to Tory MPs, he said: "There will be no increases in... rates in this Parliament."

Mr Hammond will explain the U-turn in a Commons statement later.

Unfortunately todays PMQs seems to encapsulate and exemplify the competency defecit of both the government and the opposition. Politics in this coutry is a complete and utter shambles at the moment. The government is unable to stand up to its right wing shires men and women who are now leading the country out of the EU and are facilitating the break-up of the UK (in both cases they haven't got a scooby what the consequences are going to be) and the opposition is in complete thrall to its left wing and, like a rabbit caught in a headlight, is completely immobilised as a result.

Omni shambles 2. You can't TRUST a Tory with the economy

23 years to win a election, 23 months to chaos

If they want to impose a Brexit levy going after NI on the self employed is far too blunt a tool. FFS just scrap the triple lock on pensions instead

2 billion quid to find. I wonder where the axe will fall.

Schools, hospitals, police?

My guess is the dividend tax. Corporation Tax will fall by 1% next month, so someone earning £50,000 profit will be better off by £500. A 1 1/2% hike in dividend tax from 7 1/2% to 9% would cost owner-managers of Ltd companies c. £400, so they'd still be better off by c. £100. Crucially, that rate of 9% would be the same as the Class 4 National Rate that is paid by the self-employed.

A tax rise without breaking the triple lock.

an interesting plan. if he had any minerals he'd tackle the anomaly of higher rate tax payer pension relief, recovering double figure billions and not really impacting anyone directly.

Agreed. The Higher Rate relief is very generous, particularly to those within 10 years of retirement age who will be accessing the funds shortly anyway.

You are not the first and won't be the last to suggest something like, but Hammond won't. Neither would Labour.

Real black hole in gov. finances now. Tories made a ridiculous manifesto pledge to not put up VAT, NI or Income tax. But of course they didn't budget for the slow motion car crash of Brexit

Shocking U-turn however I cannot warm to May one bit, she appeared totally indecisive and now proved.

Maggie would have turned in her grave at this farcical cock-up
