Surely if they are on sabbatical they aren't getting paid so are applying for the grant to cover expenses while writing?

Not really.

These giants will still trouser their normal salary during their "sabbatical". The £10K will fund additional expenses relating to their valuable research - in most cases this will be the cost of foreign travel somehere nice and warm.

We don't have a forum entitled "academia today" where Dr. hillbilly can take six months to think about war crimes and mans inhumanity to man (Dr Dunford doesn't even need to come up with s solution for his 10k btw) then fair dos. Sneering because I "don't understand academics" is..

If Pol Pot was in charge then, I suspect, the intellectuals would have better things to discuss than a photographic retrospective of art galleries in the north west.
