If a job provides for you and yout family, allows you to pay tax and NI and gets you out of your bed each morning, then it has meaning and purpose.

Correct although, is it good for someone to have worked hard all day with little or no purpose to wider society?

Persons responsible for these public enquiries and reports.

Usually takes about a year, costs twice the expected 6 figure budget allocated then spells out what most folk with a smidgen of common sense already knew.

German estate agents, of the three professions I have needed for a purchase over here (solicitor, architect being the other two) they’re the one I’d expect to pay least for professional services. A whopping 6.5% of the purchase price was paid to the agent which dwarfs the other two payments. They did **** all apart from introduce me to the builder and send me a Xmas card.

An academic has produced a book which is creating a bit of a stir. Here's a short trail:

'Do you have a job that you secretly believe is pointless?
If so, you have what anthropologist David Graeber calls a “bullshit job.” A professor at the London School of Economics and a leader of the early Occupy Wall Street movement, Graeber has written a new book called Bullshit Jobs: A Theory.'

He reckons up to a third of people are in jobs which they consider to have no real value or pupose. Notwithstanding that Graeber's own job might just fall into this category, does anyone have any good examples. preferably from direct personal experience?
Those that can do, those that cant lecture the doers[emoji23]

As the author says, if every corporate lawyer or management consultant in the world went on strike today, nobody would notice. If every nurse did the same, there would be catastrophe.

Here's a classic BS description of a BS job.

"XXX specialises in working with some of the most forward thinking Boards who are keen to be the best in their sector. Whether through team coaching initiatives, individual coaching or being a non-executive director, XXX is at XXX best working with the key strategic decision makers within an organization.

XXX’s experience consists of developing corporate strategies, team effectiveness and C-suite consultancy and coaching.

XXX co-founded XXX in 2004 as the first coaching brokerage business and has been the lead in developing the strategies that have driven the business to be the success it is today, broadening our offering to include team effectiveness and leadership development strategies. XXX is client centric, seeking to deliver thought provoking, effective solutions that contribute to the bottom line.

XXX has senior development experience spanning several financial services firms including Commerzbank, Nomura, Societe Generale and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein. XXX has a deep understanding of the needs of our clients who are looking for quality interventions to offer to their internal stakeholders."

I've read it several times and when you strip away all the 'solutions' (doesn't anyone read Private Eye any more?) and 'client-centric quality interventions', it sounds as if it involves charging companies a lot of money to tell them something they could probably work out for themselves. Sadly, hyphens aren't part of their 'offering'.

Tax, security for their family are massive contributors to society

so they could have done another job more productive for the economy. thats the point of the original question, whether a job has no purpose, not whether employment has a purpose.

People that paint the bicycles on cycle lanes, and as posted above, people that are paid to tell experts intheir field how to do their jobs. After 37 years in the finance industry I just got worn down by people with no experience telling me how to do my job.

Yes, thats right but what is it doing to peoples mental health, quality of life and wellbeing which ultimately puts strain on the NHS.

If they give up their non meaningful job in search of a more meaningful one I can assure the mental health will deteriorate a lot quicker sitting at at home claiming-job seekers

Just be nice if we could aspire to create work that has meaning and purpose for society and for the person working.
