Looking at getting my first tattoo, wondered where people would recommend and how much they charge roughly.

Cheers

Nine is excellent and I wouldn't go anywhere else, I've had work done by Ade and Nigel before, both amazing. I think they have big backlogs and last I heard Nigel was working on a 2 year waiting list and picking and choosing his clients depending if he was interested or not. But all the artists there are proper. Mine was way too long ago to quote prices but I'd expect to pay if you go there, I think it's worth your time to at least stick your head in and get a consultation though.

I can only recommend Skin Candy on Baker Street and Dead Slow. Skin Candy did a lot of my work but have recently been going to Dead Slow, Harry there is a great artist and thoroughly friendly chap.

Price varies but is usually an hourly rate, £60 an hour is probably average but I'm not sure; usually work out a price beforehand for my pieces.

Don't bother. In a few years' time some people are going to be making serious money removing them when they go "out of fashion" There will be massive queues, with most footballers jumping them to get to the front.

Is skin candy pretty good? My next is just a small one on my hand and skin candy is right by my house so I was thinking of just popping in to get it done quick, but I've no experience of the place except walking past.

Absolutely.

I can only speak for Wayne and Lenny but everytime I've been in there it's always been a good laugh.

They've got a Facebook page if you're curious about their styles etc.

Neither of those guys work there any more.

There are loads in Brighton and it really depends on what you want. Also it's entirely subjective, and with that in mind here are my recommendations!!

Tribal: Chris Higgins working out of his own shop in Eastbourne http://higginsandcotattoo.com/v2/ is pretty much the go to guy.

Japanese: The aforementioned Ade is very good. Now runs his own place http://www.adetatu.com/

Wild life and fine art: James who runs the Gilded Cage http://gildedcagetattoostudio.com/ is amazing

General stuff: The list is long ..... Woody at Into you (changing it's name to 1770) http://www.1770tattoo.com/ . Stew from Tattoo workshop http://www.tattooworkshop.co.uk/

I recently had a piece done by Adam Sage from 1770/Intoyou. He does it by hand without a machine. I've quite a few tattoos and it's by far the one I "enjoyed" the most. Less trauma to the skin and heals within a week. Plus he has a very unique style.

PRICES: They can vary... for the in demand super specialists it can be circa £95 per hour or you can sit for a day at around £500. But you can also get a small/medium piece done for around £150-300.

The biggest gripe is waiting lists. These can be up to two years, others may have space in a few months or even cancellations where they can fit you in at short notice.

My advice is ...... follow as many as you can on instagram. You'll get an idea of the sort of work they do and if it fits with your own ideas.

And... don't rush or over think it ;-)
