Carcassonne is impressive but can get very busy - best to get there early/late to avoid the tourist coaches.

There are so many wonderful towns and villages in that area. Try http://www.france-beautiful-villages.org/en which is an association of France's most beautiful villages for some ideas. We've visited quite a few of them and would recommend Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and Lagrasse from that area.

You could also go via the Dordogne and/or Albi which have got more beautiful villages than you could possibly visit in one go! Enjoy yourselves!

Quillan, 30 miles south of Carcassonne, is beautiful.

It is in a Pyrenean valley and there is loads to do - lakes to swim in, beautiful marked mountain walks, fabulous cycling, white water rafting, loads of restaurants and bars etc. It is close to fabulous gorges and chateaux, and other wonderful villages (Rennes Le Chateau, mentioned above, is less than 10 miles away).

It also benefits from me having a Chambres d'hotes there (Bnb) and I have vacancies at that time.

PM me if you're interested!
