Surprise, surprise - almost no detail on the Southern site. Seems like there's a limited service between Haywards Heath and Brighton currently, no mention of anything from London to HH.

I've completely given up on the southern site and always use http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ now. The live running info page is pretty good and reasonably accurate I find.

Ernest. Is the line buggered between Portsmouth and Barnham, or is it simply a case of starting slowly and seeing how it goes?

Just been out and seen a couple of trains on the move from Preston Park direction going towards Brighton station. So doesn't seem to be at a complete standstill.

I know it's probably impossible to guess at this point Ernest but is there likely to be a London to Brighton service at some point today?

Don't think you need to be an Ernest to answer this one sadly.

The live arrivals/departures link on National Rail Enquiries (below) shows all Brighton-London trains cancelled up to 13:00 at least. seeing as how the service starts winding down for Xmas late afternoon/early evening, that leaves a very small window for any trains to run.

http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ldbboard/dep/BTN/ECR/To

National Coach might be a good alternative if they're not already overhelmed. Book online, goes from Pool Valley with a couple of Brighton stops on the way out of town.

Good luck!

Ggggrrrrr

Not sure where you're heading, but you can use the Tramlink from outside East Croydon station. Direct tram to Wimbledon, also if you get the Beckenham tram you can get off at Beckenham junction for trains to London Bridge or at Beckenham Road then a five minute walk to either Clock House station (20 mins from London Bridge) or Kent House station (20 minutes from Victoria).

Seems on the BBC website they are talking about through trains around 15:00 however the SR departures board for Victoria is dreadful - all cancellations

Heading to Victoria and then on to Brighton.

Here's what Southern site says is running:

Metro area:

Victoria to East Croydon via Norbury
Mitcham Junction route
London Bridge to Caterham via Forest Hill
Clapham Jn to Shepherds Bush
London Bridge to Beckenham Jn

Main Line services:

Brighton to Haywards Heath
Brighton to Eastbourne
Brighton to Newhaven Marine
Brighton to Barnham
Bognor to Barnham
Victoria to Gatwick
Redhill to Three Bridges shuttle

National Rail Enquiries says Victoria to Beckenham Junction trains are running. Takes 20 minutes. From Beckenham Junction you can pick up the Tramlink direct to East Croydon, takes about 15 minutes. From East Croydon, well you know the rest of that route. good luck!

Cheers. Again, much appreciated. In Northampton at the moment and need to be in Craft Beer Co at 18:00. I'm hopeful NSC will help deliver me on time.

Brighton
A cable fire near East Croydon means that we are unable to operate services until further notice in this area. This will affect Brighton Mainline services between Gatwick Airport and London. This is in addition to disruption caused by last night’s storm. As a result, we are able to operate the following limited service only until further notice:

Brighton to Haywards Heath
Brighton to Eastbourne
Brighton to Newhaven
Brighton to Barnham
Bognor to Barnham
Redhill to Three Bridges

Not sounding very promising.
