Are we fed up of the Scotland "it's all about me" in / out referendum.

Scotch people. Never met a nice one. All seem to harbour grudges about what happened 500 yrs ago with chips the size of a planet on thier shoulders.

Go your own way please. At least we won't be subjected to East Stirling 0 Arbroath 0 (crowd 1 man, 1 dog) in the footy scores if it happens

Theres no polite way of saying this, but you don't appear to even have a basic understanding of the relationship between a country and its currency.

The US dollar is a different currency to the Canadian Dollar. The Canadians could have called their currency the pound, rupee, rand or whatever, it would make no difference. It's just a word. There will be an exchange rate between these 2 currencies. The important thing is that it is backed by the resources of the Canadian Central bank (I.e. Canada), and it can be affected by changes in interest rates, etc..

Scotland want to be an independent country, yet have the benefits of using the RUK currency. This raises huge questions. For example, who will be the lender of last resort for Scottish banks? How would RUK control excessive borrowing/lending by the Scotland or Scottish banks? Who will oversee the finances of Scotland and sanction it's spending plans (this needs to be done as per the EZ)? What happens if RUK says to Scotland that they must have a balanced budget and Scotland says they want to run a deficit to invest in infrastructure?

The issue about "printing the currency" is a almost irrelevant, as the majority of money is not cash, it's electronic.

Will East Stirling and Stirling Albion have to change their name to appease the Chancellor of the Exchequer

We probably would though, wouldn't we? It's not as though the BBC would suddenly announce they were no longer transmitting to Scotland, surely.

That was a vote on devolution, not full independence - back in 1979. The YES vote won by 52-48% but as only 63% voted they didn't pass the 40% of the total electorate test so didn't get devolution. 18 years of Tory rule and several million barrels of North Sea Oil later they unsurprisingly DID vote for devolution.

I can't see independence happening simply because the short-term risks are too great, especially on the back of 6 years of economic gloom.

Funny, isn't it? You get into all the arguments about currency and money markets, the role of the EU, defence agreements and stuff, but when it comes down to it Scottish independence is fuelled entirely by remarks like that. Can't say I blame them.

You mean in the same way that Russia should have been given the vote on whether Ukraine, Georgia or the Baltic states could be independent? Or Serbia on Croatia and Bosnia? Or is it only England that's allowed a say on whether other countries can be free of us?

I didn't say that. To be in a union all parties must be willing. Why don't we have a referendum to see if England is willing?

A currency union will only benefit Scotland. It would essentially mean the UK underwriting the Scottish economy.

unlike now...? my understanding is they would have fiscal restrictions imposed on budgets, which would be funded from their own taxes, while the end of Barnett formula would mean no more subbing from London.

I feel this will be a painful thing for Scotland, they mostly like the idea of independence and would probably be happy to have a war with England over it, in their hearts. But having to sit down and think about whether it is better to be part of the Union, or fend for themselves, they will mostly come to the painful conclusion that it is better to be Englands Bitch, and vote to stay with us.

If they vote for independence, will English settlers in Scotland be made to leave? Will Scots born people living in England be required to apply for citizenship or go back to Scotland? Will Scottish residents who gained UK assylum be allowed to remain in Scotland? Will the UK accept those wishing to move out of an independant Scotland to come south?
