How many of these still exist around Sussex

Originally, ice had to be imported. Thousands of tons of the stuff came into Sussex through Newhaven.

But from 1879 they started to manufacture ice locally.

The 'Kent and Sussex Pure Ice Company' had a plant along Portland Road, Portslade and advertised "Pure Ice Made from Celebrated Goldstone Water, Fresh every Day from the Factory - Private Families can be Supplied Daily".
