New Tradition - St. Palace Day

Gooners have been celebrating St Totteringham's Day, being the day each season that Spurs can no longer catch Arsenal, for quite a few years. All gone for a burton now of course, but they had fun with that for ages.

I'm wondering whether we start having a similar tradition whereby each year we celebrate the day that the impressive league record Crystal Palace have achieved this fine season is kept as their own.

Just to clarify, with their loss at the Etihad Stadium, the Eagles became the first side in English professional football history to lose their first six games of the season without scoring a single goal. However high (or low) they manage to get the bar on this particular record before they are done, it is one to be proud of, one to celebrate, and I think it is only right that each season, when that last team in the League gets their first goal, or point, securing Palace as holders of that record for another year we should all have a little celebration of St. Palace Day.

"Oh yes, 5 games in Southend United have finally scored their first goal of the season. 5 defeats in a row, but they have now scored. A solid effort there, but Crystal Palace still hold the record with their incredible (insert final number) game run of defeats and no goals at the start of the 2017/18 campaign. And so the record is held for another year by Crystal Palace. Happy St. Palace day everyone."

Sound like fun?

But it's 7 games now.

Absolutely, it might be 8 or 9 by the time they are finished. Whatever it is, no-one is getting close to beating that for years, and whenever the last person falls short in future seasons by scoring a goal or getting a point, then their record (whatever it ends up reaching) is preserved as their for another year. And that is St. Palace Day. It could run and run for the rest of our lives ......

Not sure why the need to start these threads it only takes a couple of wins for those cretins to come back on and bounce this thread.

Would prefer not to encourage them. Nice that most have disappeared

Goals or points? A team could, theoretically, not score any goals but still have seven points after seven games.

As a slight O/T aside from this thread the thing I love most about all this is that it is entirely self-inflicted. Easily their best performance was when they lost 1-0 at Burnley. They were the better side, and if it hadn't been for a shocking back-pass and a shocking miss they'd have won 1-0 rather than losing. Any vaguely competent CEO and board might have thought that the new manager and new system were beginning to settle down and they were moving in the right direction, even if it was taking a bit longer than hoped. Amusingly though the Palace CEO and Board and are so far away from competent as it's possible to be without being David Belloti. Hopefully there are still some more chuckles to come, and hopefully they'll extend the record by a few more games before they get an inevitable win. (And yes, maybe even bounce back)

..
True, but even if they bounce back the record will stay there until an even worse team come along.

No it doesn't, and that's the beauty of it. No matter what happens for the rest of this season, they have set a record that may NEVER get beaten. That's done, it's in the books, they have achieved the worst start in the HISTORY of English Professional football.

What happens from now is irrelevant it is still the record, this is the worst EVER start to a season, and we are denying ourselves if we don't celebrate it now, and forever. Who looked and chuckled at Bon Accord's record 36-0 defeat, and wondered what happened the following week? No-one, you just laugh at the record that has been set.

No it doesn't. They can bounce this thread all they want, but they're already etched in the record books NOW for officially being the worst football team in history from the start of a season. No other team in the history of professional football has had a more disastrous start to a campaign. Ever. And that's all theirs. A couple of wins won't ever change that - the only thing that can change it is if someone else beats their record at some point in the years to come.

Which, lets face it, is highly unlikely.

Surely it would be St Nigel's Day.

Nigel, of course, being the patron saint of goalless winless starts to a season.

Don't normally like the Mail, but this is lovely

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...hame-Crystal-Palace-no-wins-points-goals.html

Crystal Palace's Goal of the Month competition for September was conspicuous by its absence. As was August's, for that matter.

Of course, that is because there haven't been any goals. Seven Premier League games, seven defeats, and not once have Palace fans seen the opposition's net ripple.

Every week, the Eagles seem to break new ground, first under Frank de Boer and now Roy Hodgson. Here, Sportsmail takes a look at the stats that shame the Premier League's basement boys...

Crystal Palace are now the only side in Europe's top 20 divisions to not have found the back of the net this season

This is a list consisting of a remarkable 316 teams, made up from countries including the likes of Spain, Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Turkey, Israel... the list goes on. Every single team has scored, apart from Crystal Palace.
Only Halifax Town in 1990-91 have gone on a longer run from the start of a season in league history (top four tiers) without a goal

Palace's lack of a goal against Manchester United at the weekend took them to 630 Premier League minutes without scoring, overtaking Burnley's 1997-98 tally of 552 minutes. Now, only Halifax's 730 is above the Eagles.

Crystal Palace have lost eight consecutive league games without scoring, the joint-longest run in English league history

Hartlepool (in 1970 and 1993) and Sunderland (1977) are the other two sides to have accomplished this. The first of Palace's defeats on this run came last season at Old Trafford on the final day. No team has ever gone nine defeats without a goal and Palace, by the way, have Chelsea next up.
First team in 129 years of the Football League to lose their first seven matches without scoring a single goal

This stat pretty much does its own talking. Teams have lost their opening seven before (Portsmouth - see next stat), but at least they scored on the way. Palace have had 16 shots on target, but failed to beat any of the seven goalkeepers they've faced.

Second Premier League side in history (after Portsmouth in 2009-10) to lose their opening seven matches

It's worth noting that Portsmouth went on to win their eighth game, a 1-0 away victory over Wolves thanks to a strike from Hassan Yebda. And who was in goal for the losers that day? None other than Crystal Palace's Wayne Hennessey. It's funny how that sort of thing works out.
Palace's last 12 Premier League matches: 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 4 - 0 - 0 - 0

That's 12 Premier League matches between April 26 and today, with only a coupon-busting 4-0 victory over Hull the anomaly. 11 of the 12 have seen Palace fail to score, and there have been three managers in the dugout over that period.

Palace have had the most errors leading to a goal (three) of any top flight team this season

Nine sides in the Premier League can rest easy in the knowledge that no defensive errors have led to the opposition scoring this season. A few teams, meanwhile, may look back at one mistake with disdain. Palace, though, have made three - more than any other side. Chung-yong Lee, we're looking at you.
Palace are the only Premier League team not to keep a clean sheet this season

A stat that reflects badly on Wayne Hennessey in the Crystal Palace goal. The Wales No 1 has conceded 17, while watching his side score zero at the other end. United have six clean sheets, City five. Even Bournemouth, after a dreadful start, have one.

Palace have had the second least shots on target (16) of the 20 Premier League sides so far this season

Good news, Palace fans... we've found a stat in which there is a worse team than yours. Swansea have only managed 11 shots on target to Palace's 16, making the Eagles only the second worst in the division. That said, Swansea have netted three goals from their 11, and two of them were against Palace. Oops.
Palace are one of five teams in top-flight history to lose all seven of their opening matches

Liverpool (1899-1900), Bolton (1902-1903), Manchester United (1930-1931), Portsmouth (2009-2010) and Crystal Palace (2017-18) are the other five teams to have lost their seven opening league matches. Something that doesn't bode well for Hodgson's men is that only Liverpool, back in 1900, survived relegation come the end of the campaign.

It's worth noting that two of those sides went on to lose more - Liverpool and United. The 1900 Liverpool side lost an eighth before turning it around to avoid relegation, while the 1931 United team lost a remarkable 12 in a row, eventually finishing 22nd and going down. At least Palace can take solace from the fact that 20th is as bad as it can get for them.

I was trying to find the club with the longest consecutive run of Premier League games without scoring, and as far as I can see Crystal Palace will beat the Crystal Palace side of 1995 (9 games) if they fail to score in the next 2 games, having failed to score in the last game of last season.

Side notes, Christian Benteke was also in the Aston Villa squad that went seven games without scoring in 2015, and Sunderland beat Crystal Palace 4-0 before going on their seven game goalless stretch last season, which are the next two longest runs after Crystal Palace 1995
Jason Puncheon of Crystal Palace, had more shots without scoring a goal than any other player in the Premier league last season (45)

I wish I was clever enough to make a You Tube video of half a dozen of their nearest misses, while playing the Goal of the Month music.

That would be an excellent use of someone's spare time. I too hope that one day this exists.

Betty Windsor at ''The Palace'' says she will give an extra Bank Holiday if ''Palace'' scores this season but no one is sure if she means Prince Philip or Crystal Palace

I think St Nigel's day will only have a chance of taking off if Palace are actually relegated, otherwise we'd be celebrating / remembering the year when, despite the worst start ever, they survived. Best not print the beer mats just yet, Palace may still pull off the great escape.

Agree with this. St. Nigel's Day will be a brilliant thing but only if they actually go down.

Perhaps the tradition should be something like to purchase a special bottle at the start of each season which is only cracked open once St. Nigel's Day comes round...
