If you took 100 men in business v 100 women in business if 60 men are good 40 women will be. it's not black and white, but the odds are naturally stacked in the male favour in business, probably 60:40 which I suspect explains the gender pay gap.

Well this is terrific news, as in your post on page 8, you stated that men will be better eight times out of ten, so congratulations: you're getting less sexist by the minute.

The biggest pay differential is in construction. Interesting. I wonder how many female bricklayers, groundworkers, carpenters, etc are out there ? I rarely meet any.

Massive can of worms this due to the difficulties in comparing not just jobs/roles, but the relative experience of individuals etc. I’ve got a real example at the moment of someone complaining that another person in the team is paid a bit more than them........the higher paid person has more experience, better qualifications and has been in the job longer and was recruited from an organisation that pays more than where the other person came from (so lots of factors) but apparently the pay difference is ‘because he’s male’.

Publication of the data will lead to even more issues. Of course, where I have other people in the team where the females are paid more than the males (for similar reasons) this’ll be ignored........

These are the most stupid statistics ever. Airlines have a massive gender pay gap because pilots get paid a lot of money and there are not many women pilots. How can the airlines be blamed because not many women want to fly aeroplanes? The whole exercise is completely pointless.

Correct......the way the data has been compiled and reported is so flawed it’s ridiculous. It takes no account of the typically relative numbers of more senior male people in many organisations (which is a separate issue and also being subject to some pretty daft forced manipulation through positive discrimination in many firms now)

It’s worse than pointless though - it’s inflammatory, inaccurate and dangerous, and May’s comments (‘burning injustice’ ?) are equally stupid.

I can see organisations paying men less rather than women more to meet their gender pay targets in the future.

There are obvious reasons why women frequently have less experience than men in work, usually through choice, but for some reason that isn't part of the debate.

It will be a day of concern the day Women footballers get the same wages as Men without generating a fraction of the income.

the reports do not highlight disparity in gender of senior roles, they have only used a crude benchmark of median pay differentials across the entire business. they also fail to recognise the tendency for women to take career breaks, take up part time positions or generally have differing priorities when negotiating pay and conditions, where men tend to push for money, women for flexible working hours. it is not misogyny to say this, just observation of well known and documented trends. in the cohort of women graduates up to 30 the pay gap disappears. strangely, something happens in the next cohort 30-40 that changes that, can you guess what it is?

My missus is very intelligent, university educated and in a senior management position at a school. She’s just phoned me from her car (her own car, not mine that she’s borrowed) to ask how to tune the radio back in to 5 Live.

Would you seriously want someone with a brain like that behind the controls of a plane that you’re a passenger on?!

We PAY our women’s team?!! No wonder the club makes such as loss if it’s subsidising the cost of running a professional women’s team that play in front of a few hundred supporters (and sweaty sex pests).

I managed a person who was paid £12k a year more than I was, I am paid more than my manager who is a female.

My manager has not delivered and managed large projects and services like I have, my manager is far more ambitious than I am but we are at different points of our careers.

Once again with there is some very bad misreporting by talking about pay instead of earnings. For example, in my place of work if you took the raw statistics of teachers then the earnings of men are higher than the earnings of the women. The simple reason being that a large number of females at the company CHOOSE to work part-time. In terms of PAY, there is no difference whatsoever, male and female teachers get paid exactly the same for the same roles. In my view this means that there is no pay gap whatsoever.

Agreed. The issue being that the feminist narrative continues to say that men get PAID 18% more than women which just isn't true, they EARN 18% more as they are more likely to be in full time work than part time. There are the odd cases whereby there is unfairness such as the BBC figures but in nearly every company men and women get paid EXACTLY the same in like for like work.

We know that men earn more than women because on average they do longer hours, females are more likely to work part-tome especially after having children. So, this whole analysis seems rather futile.

This is the issue for me, constantly having the discussion that men get paid more than women in the UK when they do not. The reporting of the '18% pay gap' makes people believe that men are paid more for the same jobs, carrying out a quick analysis with people and this indeed does seem to be the accepted belief.



I remember a QI show where the question was about whom was paid more at Wimbledon men or women. The Answer was women. They played less sets than men so the money they received per set was more than the male players... again just statistics. I know my job published theirs it showed men got more bonuses but that we paid the same bonus to men as women. It was just that more men were in doing the role that paid a bigger bonus. The problem they have is getting the women to do this role.

I guess the question is, if this was the other way round and women were paid more, would men just accept it? I agree that this report is pointless unless we are told about the underlying circumstances that make up these statistics. What would be nice if someone actually asked why girls who do statically much better at school then boys end up in the lower paid jobs. No knee jerk reactions actually ask the average women. I believe that It may turn out to be nothing deliberately sexist, but the life choices that we make. The top paid jobs in a company will probably mean you have to compromise your life and your family, being at the jobs back and call. I don’t think the majority of women want that. Despite what some misogynists say it has nothing to with intelligence or ability.

I am a senior network engineer and worked in IT for over 25 years, I decided very early on that I wanted to be technically the best I could be, but I did not want to be a manger, no interest at all. But luckily for me I choose a career that is well paid.

if you and your partner were equally paid do you not think that it would be better for you, if pressure to be the “bread winner” was shared?

The reason I ask is that my husband who also worked in IT got made redundant, because it was quite a specialist role and his age he found it really difficult to find another job doing the same thing. He has moved in to a completely new career, which of course means a massive pay cut. The only reason we have be able to afford for him to do this is because of my salary. It is the best thing that could of happened because he is so much happier doing what he is doing now, and this makes me happy.

Now if we had the more traditional relationship where he was the high earner, I was in a low paid job, in order for us to pay the bills, he would have been forced to try to continue in a role he was unhappy with, otherwise financially we would have been in trouble and the stress he would have felt during that time would have been much more. So rather then seeing women being more equal as some sort of threat the way I see things, it benefits everyone.

Anyway the main problem I see with all these reports is that as a women I am represented by some feminist group that I never asked to be and I bet most women feel the same way. Do I believe that we live in an equal society, no, not even close, but I want to be able to fight my own battles about the things that are important to me.

Sorry! That’s the end of my ramble.

When I’m interviewing the choice is based on which candidate has the better experience, qualifications and enthusiasm for the job. If those are equal then it comes down to who has the better tits.

I think the fact is that you are correct in that women by nature can be more emotional than men, amongst other differences in personalities, generally speaking; these can be explained by biological processes and evolutionary theory, although some feminists will still disagree.

However where I think you are wrong is that women in business need to address this human nature of theirs to succeed. It is your attitude within business that needs to change. If women are more emotional at times, it doesn't necessarily make them any worse at their jobs - it could even make them better in some positions as it could suggest greater levels of empathy.

If you and others believe these innate behaviours make women less 'credible' then we need to redefine 'credibility'.

Plenty of "sexist" or honest posts on this thread. Just saying :whistle:
