Pretty impressive set of recent results, the Academy is obviously starting to work! Also interesting that Blackburn have such a good under 23 team whilst United are in the relegation mire in the 1st division.

Have to give Kudos to Simon Rusk, his coaching team and the recruitment team as it appears that we're beginning to see some potential first teamers coming through the U23's. Can see a number of them going out on loan to Leagues 1 and 2 over the summer.

He is only 18.

Quite, but the original question was, should he step up to the main squad.

I'm not sure whats wrong to point out he looks a bit lightweight for Men's football and needs to get some experiance before stepping up.

If we got promoted (and I realise it's a big if) would we tend to loan out our players less so we could compete in the top youth league or would the club still prefer loaning out players to lower league clubs? Difficult one. I still think league football is far more valuable experience for young players but surely if we loaned out too many we'd get relegated straight back down?

Ryan Sessegnon is only 17 now - and he's been playing for the Fulham first team for more than 18 months. And he's no more than a slip of a lad.

If you're old enough, you're good enough........

There is an odd exception, but it is an exception rather than a rule. Some players are early developers but most develop more in their early 20s.

Ryan Sessegnon is freakishly good for his age, so he plays. His twin brother isn't, so he doesn't - I doubt the Fulham fans are complaining about it.

Connolly is already playing U23s at (just) 18, so he's ahead of 'schedule'. If he did struggle physically in the cup game he played, then it is because he needs to learn to use his physique (rather than being 'lightweight'). He's a big strong lad - like Rooney at that age.

Without a doubt if you are good enough, However not everyone devlops at the same rate.

How many 17 year olds do you see tearing up the Premier League, The last young player to come through to make a real Impact from memory would be Rashford, However look at Harry Kane, he was in his 20s before he cut it at Spurs.

Development and growth are key and each player needs to be looked after differently, a blanket rule simply does not apply.

However...

If you are young and not good enough yet, you may still be good enough when you are older.

I didn't say it was a blanket rule. In truth, the blanket rule far too often seems to be hold them back, hold them back, hold them back! Whereas you never really know whether someone can make he next grade unless they get to try.

There is a truth to this, but how many clubs have the luxury of "testing" lads for 10+ games - the stakes are so high.

You could start by testing them for ten-fifteen minutes!

We have to name a 25 man squad, and having the luxury of a young inexperienced player on the bench who may be able to come on once we're 3-0 up cannot happen at this level.

We have experienced coaching staff who we have to trust to assess who can make the step up and who can't.
