Will the points needed for survival be well below 40 points this season?

Luckily for us our poor run of results has not done too much damage, in a lot of seasons we would have probably been in the bottom 3 with a gap to the 4th bottom.

That’s not particularly unusual in the Premier League. Look at the record for teams like Palace and Stoke in previous seasons. If you get a decent gap it can take ages for others to catch up as it’s so rare for sides near the bottom to win even back to back games.

People forget that even under Hughton we won few games in that second part of 2014/15 - but the ultimate bottom 3 won even fewer and 42 points would have been enough to stay up that season not the mythical Champ “50”. Come to think of it there were plenty of threads last year saying 89/90+ needed for automatic. Instead - 86.
Why are the bottom few clubs who can’t win for toffee suddenly going to start consistently winning ?

It's just that people have a fear that they will start winning.

I doubt any team below us will get more than 11 more points from 11 games. Given that we have a 2 point advantage over 18th, we'll need 9 more ( +1 for goal difference, just in case ).

If Southampton and Stoke lose the next few then the 38 target could come down to something like 34.
