[Sussex] East Sussex - Where is nice to live?

Afternoon all,

Requesting a wee bit of advice please. I am looking at a new job based in Eastboune and my Mrs might be also be moving jobs to Brighton. We live near Arundel at the moment as this is convenient for her and my current employment. If all goes well and we get the new jobs I think the commute will start to grind after a wee while so was looking at where in the surrounding area might be worth looking at moving to.

Ideally within 30 min drive of Eastbourne and up to 40 mins train to Brighton. Village location preferably close to good dog walks, school for my little badgers. Any advice of where is nice and where to avoid is welcome.

A lot of TV personalities live in and around the Crowborougfh area so I wouild assumer that is quite good and not all very expensive places some at normal prices.

i'd say pretty much anywhere along the A27 corridor from Lewes to Eastbourne is nice place to live. as long as you dont *need* to use said road in the rush hour, or tolerate traffic.

Although l profess to know very little about the eastern half of our county, one place l do really like is Seaford, a quiet town, few nice old pubs, country walks all around, property still relatively inexpensive by Sussex standards.

A town though and not a village, and have no idea what schools are like. There are a few Seaford residents amongst the NSC ranks, who I'm sure are all agog to tell you more than l am able to.

My immediate thoughts are:
Berwick: no school (think the closest is the dicker or Alfriston) but trains direct to Brighton and Eastbourne.
The Dicker: trains from Berwick, park mead primary school and St Beads.
Alfriston: Primary School, trains from Berwick or Seaford.
Ringmer: just outside lewes, trains from Lewes, primary and secondary schools.
Kingston Village - Primary School, outskirts of Lewes, trains from Lewes or Falmer.
Firle and Glynde (as someone already suggested): trains from Glynde.

One thing to consider is the flow of traffic on the A27, I do the journey from Brighton to Eastbourne and back everyday and its not too bad as we are going in to Eastbourne rather than coming out around rush hour in the morning. Coming out of Eastbourne towards Brighton the traffic can sometimes be bumper to bumper until you get to Beddingham.

Regardless on which way you are going there are also fairly regular problems which will delay your journey, last week it took me 2 hours to get back to Brighton due to the road being closed, however on a good run its 30mins-40min in either direction.

I am a native of Crowborough and yes, it is a nice place, however, (and it pains me to say it) apart from that it has no night-life to speak of, so you will find yourself travelling to the likes of Tunbridge Wells for a night out. Crowborough's High Street has lost a lot of it's vibrancy from a few years ago. People call it the 'bedroom of Sussex' as most people just sleep there while working and socialising elsewhere.

I now live in Uckfield, which benefits from having a great independent Cinema, selection of good restaurants, great schools and a vibrant community feel. There are plenty of small villages/hamlets around the town, such as Buxted, Piltdown, Isfield & Halland that are all attractive places in my opinion.

Uckfield and Crowborough are great but don't meet the spec, no trains to Brighton or Eastbourne and around 40min to both by car.

Location Location Location is what they say. When I moved last year, it was partly about location to a Seagulls Travel pick-up point!

Robertsbridge is nice has a mainline train station, steam railway, three pubs, a superb Indian restaurant, hardware/country store, two flower shops and a book shop.

Primary school
Secondary school (good school and the smallest in whole of Sussex so good class sizes)

25 mins Eastbourne 40 mins Brighton.

Not bad for a small village

Oh a bonus it already has it's resident idiot.....ME

I echo these sentiments, up until January last year I was lucky enough to work in Robertsbridge (at the secondary school infact).

It's also base of cricket bat/wear manufacturer Gray-Nicolls and home to a former Dr Who in Tom Baker (who I once let go infront of me in the queue at the local shop).

Cooden Beach area of Bexhill is rather nice too.

No trains but a good bus service and I would say 40 mins to either Brighton or Eastbourne by car is stretching it a little. I havent done the journey much but would suggest nearer 30 mins to either.
