This could the hippo's year. He combines pure power with unpredictability and raw, uncontrollable aggression. He's not an apex predator but lives surrounded by them and they all shit themselves when they're near. He's not even a predator. He's just hard as ****ing nails.

He's hard because he's big and fat, like Big Daddy. He can't actually get in any proper fights because he is so lazy and slow. He's just a grumpy Victor Meldrew.

No way Jose. He's hard because he's a huge, hulking rage meister. If anything he's closest to the Incredible Hulk. Except the Hippo goes into Hulk mode for fun. No one else in this competition causes so much havoc, death and destruction for the sheer hell of it. Apex predators like the african crocodile and lion shit themselves when he's around.
And if you think he's slow I dare you to go up to one, poke it with a stick and jog away...

2012 SF lost (along with the Croc) in a 3-WAY BOUT to Black Mamba*
2013 SF lost (along with Cassowary, and AGAIN in a 3 way bout) to Polar Bear**
2014 SF lost to Mantis Shrimp 48-23
2015 Final lost to Croc 101-65
2016 QF lost to Wolverine 54-47
2017 QF lost to Honey Badger 69-51
*Hippo had drawn with Black Mamba in the quarters and both were put through.

Gotta love those triple threat bouts.
I vaguely remember either Turienzos Lovechild or GNLF really bigging them up but somehow had missed the fact that Hippo had suffered the misfortune of encountering both of these in successive years.

yeh I was all about the triple threats
mainly cos it was an absolute BALL ACHE doing a sudden death extra time face off and for some reason my tenure was MARRED by deadlock encounters

Matt that is just beautiful statage. When the official WHC history book is written you will feature prominently.
The Hippo is a big contender. It takes a champion to beat him. Seven of those nine defeats have come at the hands of the eventual champion. And of the other two one was to the losing finalist.
With the croc already defeated, the Polar bear's seeming lack of popular support and with the Honey Badger possibly with his feet up after claiming the title last year I fancy the Hippo to go all the way and win his second championship.

2010 R2 - Honey Badger 62 (14) v (10) 62 Orca
2011 Group Stage - Inland Taipan 13 (15) - (12) 13 Seagull (This is the point you gave up on playoffs)
2012 QF - Hippo 26 -26 Black Mamba - both advanced to triple threat SF.
2013 Group Stage - BulletAnt / Bird Eating Spider / Crown of Thorns Starfish all scored 5 points and were advanced to a4-way R2 match up against the Honey Badger which, predictably,won with ease.
2013 QF - Hippo 58 - 58 Cassowary - both advanced to triple threat SF
2015 Group Stage - Seagull 15 (72) - (56) 15 Japanese Giant Hornet - GNLF steps in and the playoffs return with a belter.
2016 Group Stage - Tardigrade 16 (32) - (35) 16 African Elephant
2017 Group Stage - Mantis Shrimp 12 (72) - (74) 12 Wolverine - stone cold classic from last year.
