Albion are now within touching distance of securing a play-off spot in Premier League 2 Division Two. If Wolves don't win against Middlesbrough on Thursday and Fulham fail to beat Southampton on Friday, Albion secure their spot with two games still left to play.

Wolves 1 - 1 Middlesbrough tonight. Wolves now can't catch us (or, at least, other results would have to go their way and they would need to overturn a GD differential that is currently 17, meaning they would probably need to beat us by about 8 clear goals in the final regular season game at Molineux in 11 days time). That means if Fulham don't beat Southampton tomorrow we will be in the play-offs.

What format do the play offs take?

Premier League 2 explained

* In Division 2, the league winners get automatic promotion to Division 1

* Teams ranked second, third, fourth and fifth go into a promotion play-off

* Second plays fifth place at home and third hosts fourth in the semi-finals, both at the club’s main stadium, while the final takes place at the home ground of the team who finished highest in the league

* All play-off matches are one-off ties, decided by extra-time and then penalties if the match is level after 120 minutes

Barring a monstrous collapse in Albion's last two matches, a play-off spot has now been secured. Based upon the format outlined above, the aim must be to maintain that 3rd spot to ensure a home fixture in the play-offs at the Amex.

There would be something very satisfying about Man Utd & Sunderland being relegated from Div 1 with us taking one of their places too should we win the play-offs!

So the possibility is that, for the second year running, one of our teams will be at Villa Park for a decisive last match. How many 'Portillo's' will be there I wonder.
