Personally as somebody who lives in The Netherlands I find Amsterdam now an awful place to visit. It's overran with tourists (mainly drunken Brits) and expensive. There are so many other nice places to visit in NL, especially places less than an hour from Amsterdam.
On a holiday in Amsterdam 20 years ago, we got the train one day to Haarlem (not the NYC version!). Which was a beautiful small city with alot of history, and a museum/gallery celebrating the work of golden age painter Frans Hals. Another day we cycled to the open air museum at Zaanse Schans. We loved Arnsterdam, but it was rewarding looking around elsewhere too.
