I absconded from NSC for a while but as I'm still in the Strava group, recent PBs are a 19:21 5K at Hove Promenade, and a 1:28 HM at North Ealing. Might be slightly ambitious but aiming for sub 3:05 at Brighton Marathon (for good for age at London). Currently feel a bit off pace.

Last BM effort was 3h 25m but have got a lot quicker over the summer and putting in the miles.

North Ealing is a really great race if anyone fancies a late summer HM.

A respectable 72.8% at Cannons Park last August is your AG best a quick search tells me. Only season best times are added to the table so let us know when you do a 5k after all this marathon plodding.

There are watches which you can store music on and use Bluetooth headphones but I'd steer clear. I used to have a Samsung Gear Fit 2, the music feature was good but the running features left a lot to be desired.

I'd recommend the Garmin Forerunner 235. I know a lot of others on here have got one and given positive reviews.

For Bluetooth headphones I highly recommend the Plantronics Backbeat Fit. They're by far the best headphones I've had for running. They don't block out background sound, don't fall out of your ears, and there's no wire to bang against your neck.

You could also get a cheap clip-on MP3 player instead of carrying an iPhone with you.

Enjoying it while I can but aware that the aptly named achilles may need rest at any time.
I'd entered the BM but thought after trekking up mountains in Nepal in December may as well try the Moyleman as part of the training. [MENTION=24635]Greg Bobkin[/MENTION] will be raring to go at the start line but I plan to go off very slow with the plan of negative splits, despite Mt Caburn, and a 4'50ish time. The BM I plan negative splits again, no heroics and a sub-4. Plan B for both is to give up at 20 and walk......
Then it's triathlon training, weakest link relay and the summer Phoenix 10k will be my first race effort. Sure we'll meet up at a Parkrun soon. Good luck.
You can hold me back and pace me then. I've got to slow down at the start of races!

Whilst the 235 is a good watch, I have been using mine for 2 years it's a bit long in the tooth now. I think it was releases in 2015, I would be tempted to read around to see if Garmin are updating the line in the next few months.

The only downside of the 235 is that I find the HRM useless as it just follows my running cadence so it thinks by heart beat is running a maximum even on slow runs. There are work around for that but I find the data to be so unreliable to be worthless, and it thinks I have a V20 of an 18 year old. If you care about that you could get a chest strap, or I hear that the fancy but stupidly expensive Bose sport and Jabra elite sport headphones have a pretty good HRM built into the ear piece.

E: this website says wait as Garmin have started teasing a 245 replacement.

Catching up on the thread while waiting to go for an 8k hill run in my new trainers once I've digested a piece of toast and marmite.

I use a 235, I upgraded from the Forerunner 10 which did not last the whole of the marathon I ran, contributing to me missing sub 4 by 6 seconds. I think the HRM is fairly accurate IF the HRM on gym treadmills, obtained by gripping the bars, are also accurate. I work away a lot and sometimes have to resort to a quick half hour on the dreadmill to get anything in at all. Whenever I've checked my heart rate on the machine and compared it to the 235 it's matched exactly - the last time this Wednesday morning.

The issue I have had is that I've been through three of them already, two having to be replaced under warranty. Watch 1 died when I first got injured. Instead of wearing it as a watch I let the battery run completely flat and it just wouldn't charge back up at all when I wanted to wear it just as a watch / hrm / step counter. They sent me a replacement which went completely bananas almost immediately. The time would never keep to what was set despite being manual, the light hardly worked and the step counter was all over the place. Watch 3 has been with me since April last year and has been ok touch wood. If I was buying now though I'd wait to see if something better was imminent.

I find the table fascinating. I have an official chip time for 10 miles but I can't remember the seconds, only that it was 1hr 23 minutes and something in Bright10 in Oct 15. Looking at everyone's PBs that has done at least a HM and preferably a marathon it shows that either the Macmillan pace guide, which I've been treating as a bible, is way out or that people's 5k PBs and long distance PBs have been at completely different times. Even though I'm frustrated with my marathon time it actually indicates my HM and 5k bests should be a lot quicker, yet both were flat out (for me).

If the Big Fella is racing it, I might make my way down there! I was thinking about getting along to Hove Park, I've done the Prom three weeks in a row - but I could manage a 4th if there's a toe to toe race on offer. We've never raced a 5k, thinking about it.
