Negative Chanting - Acceptable or a Lack of Class?

High up on the South Downs.
Oh well, seems like I'm on my own here then!

Baiting home fans with humour is good but most of the chants are so predictable. Sorry if that is middle class. My dad worked in a factory. Honest.
Worst support I've ever seen, shit ground no fans, is this a library etc etc.
Is there a fire drill? Seems to be one every home game at the Amex if we're honest.

well,i sort of follow you point to some degree and will not ridicule but it does seem a strange thing to start a thread about.

To be honest, that's something that I've found really refreshing about Brighton. I'm a Chelsea fan that's attended 200-odd matches up there, but have found myself priced out to go as regularly as I used to, so nowadays I'm attending Brighton games more. I like the fact that Brighton chant and sing about their team and only occasionally sing about others. At Chelsea, I'd say most of the songs are about how much they hate Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham and so on.

I'm with you. I'm penning a little tune for us now.

"In your middle class homes,
You look in the Farmer's Market
For something local to eat
you find organic cows cheek
And you think it's a treat
You wait for a train
But it never comes
In your middle class homes"

Not bad at all

You're just a small town in " "
I wanna go home, " " is a S***hole
Your grounds too big for you
You're just a fat Spanish Waiter
Have you ever seen your c***
He's got a pie in his pocket
W**ker, W**ker, W**ker
You're not fit to referee
You're going down with the " "
1 nil and you still don't sing
You're F***ing s**t, you're f***king s**t etc...

That was the track list for my favourite album back in the 70s by The Carpenters.

I think it was called "Sussex Ambulance" and had on the cover the picture of a Wagon Wheel biscuit being crushed by a Doctor Martens boot.

I think humour is the important thing here.

I was sat near the away fans in the south for the QPR game instead of my usual eerie in the WSU - and particularly enjoyed their repeated renditions of "you're nothing special, we lose every week" and the phantom goal celebration towards the end.

Two old favourites from away trips way back were "you're just a small town in Poland" to the Walsall fans, and " You've got a hole in your telly" at Wolves when they were encountering difficulties with their big screen.

Many Many others. All can be great and are part of what being a supported is all about. I'd suggest 1 third, maybe half at some games are what the OP might describe as negative chanting.

And long may it continue.....

"We forgot you were here..............."

One of the best recently, came from the Hull fans. 'You're so southern, you're practically French'.

Is this a wind up? I recently heard the Pompey manager apologising as their fans sang "Your going home in a fcing ambulance " for goodness sake. I was among many singing the same when the Tank did Fuchillo many years ago. That's what makes live matches more fun than sitting on the sofa!
Maybe that is the problem.... How about "Get me a large Earl Grey before the advertssssss"

Your support is rather good!, your support is rather good!
Your town is lovely, I wish I could stay!
1 nil and we admire your restraint, 1 nil and we admire your restraint
Your grounds so spacious! Your grounds so spacious!
Who's the lovely chap in black?, who's the lovely chap in black?
Strawberry blonde, really suits you, strawberry blonde, really suits you.
With some of your decisions we're not sure, with some of your decisions we're not sure.

I think you're onto something with those.

A similar one that occurred to me walking through the streets of Fulham last week was
"We can't afford your houses! We can't afford your houses!"
