I'm ignorant about Uber at the moment, so can anyone join Uber then, don't you need to have a licence to carry passengers?

App says £29-£38 as its fare estimate.

I'm wondering if the prices the app is quoting for Brighton currently are correct, as it's saying £14-19 from Brighton Station to the Amex. I'm sure we've paid less than that in a rank cab.

The estimates at the moment do seem quite high.

I use Uber all the time in Paris and the estimates are typically higher than the actual fare. That said it will depend on the number of drivers etc.

Uber is great. Peer to peer stuff is fantastic IMO

It may well be using a default pricing formula, maybe something they use for long distance trips or something. Brighton Station to the Amex would be, at a guess, £12-£15 in a cab, based on the fact a cab from my place near Fiveways to the University of Sussex is £9-£11.

I did wonder if it is currently defaulting to surge pricing as no drivers are available (as the service isn't live yet).

The estimated fare from my home to West Street in Brighton is £11-14. It usually costs about that anyway. Although the sign up offer of a £15 discount means a free journey!

I had one hell of an Uber driver in Chicago. He picked me up at O'Hare Airport terminal 5 BA. It took almost an hour and a half to get to the Condo off Milwaukee Ave due to heavy traffic on a Thursday at 10:00 p.m. Chicago seems full of traffic congestion at all hours. I didn't even notice how long it was because he kept answering all my questions about Chicago and where everything was located. When we got to the condo I asked if he could take me to a near by market to buy some items so I could stock up the condo. He turned off the Uber app after helping get my baggage into the condo and took me to the market. After shopping for over 20 minutes I thought he would be gone but the driver was still waiting there in his Toyota Camry. He helped me get the market items in his car and then get them into the condo. Then he took me to Wrigleyville and we talked sport the whole way. I did throw him a twenty but I don't think he would have minded not getting paid a tip. After all he had great company.

Did you get to that Cubs game ?

Hopefully this helps trips back to Worthing etc. Fed up of the con artist Brighton rank cabs who want to charge a fixed price, usually 25%-50% more than the meter cost, and refuse to use a meter.

I use cabs most week days, I get a good service and the drivers are almost always friendly and up for a chat. They are hardly millionaires either and they need to earn enough to live on. I won't be changing to Uber. (I work in catering!)

don't forget the N700 night bus back to Worthing at only £6. takes 45 mins and drops off inc South Street and then onto the Boulevard in Durrington and the Lamb pub. leaves at circa 20 mins to each hour and upto 2.40 am I think (details on Stagecoach website). you can then cab from Worthing to your house if needs be !

I did the identical journey pretty much a couple of weeks running. After a decent night in casino and was feeling flush got a black cab from Piccadilly Circus to East Acton. £40.

Having been stung for a dinner at Goucho Regent Street and not feeling so flush got an Uber. £13.

I do feel sorry for the cabbies as how can they compete with that but as a consumer it's ****ing great. Plus cabs in Brighton are a ****ing rip off. Off the rank back to Crowborough £110.

I think you may find that the price goes up and down according to demand/availability etc so as they have not even started yet you cannot believe that price, for example in extreme circumstances when there was a terrorist alert in Sydney the cost to get the hell out of there went up to a ridiculous price.
I dont live in Brighton but i do know that the cost of taxis is ridiculous so i think they deserve everything they get.
BUT, do not think that Uber is the great answer to everything, they are a very rich and unscrupulous company, true it suits some of their drivers but most are totally ripped off by the time they have paid all there costs to Uber, i would also think that bungs were made to the council for the license.
There has also been issues over insurance and there drivers etc etc, the boss of Uber is one very hard nosed b****.
I know a bit about them because my bro in law is a London cabbie so obviously hates them and black cab drivers are doing all they can to get rid of them, they have a point what with the Knowledge and all that,i was surprised Boris gave them a license, maybe another bung, the cabbies are wasting there time Uber are there to stay in London.
Personally i think they are an horrible company, but Brighton cabs deserve whats coming to them.
