I cringe that I'm deemed to be part of a country that voted for an act like Austria. "We are Unity" says Conchita. Just WTF?
Take the beard away and you get no votes. Shit song, enough said.

Drag is nothing new to Eurovision or particularly controversial. However Conchita Wurst, Austria’s entry for 2014 and the drag persona of Austrian singer Tom Neuworth, is different. Conchita’s character challenges traditional ideas about gender, notions of beauty and conformity. Recently there have been complaints in some countries from groups calling for Austria's performance to be censored from the Eurovision broadcast as they view her as a corruptive influence! Conchita's performance takes place during tense times in Europe. Only last week Russian politician Vitaly Milonov described Eurovision as a ‘Europe-wide gay parade’. It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out.

Have to disagree. I'd say it's very much 2014. This artist has challenged gender stereotyping and challenged the bullying backlash of macho culture in parts of Europe.

The song was an enjoyable one regardless, I loved it when Dana International won in 1998, and I'm pleased again this year. If there are some in Eastern Europe who want to take this competition seriously then they, like Belarus, cannot call for people like this to be banned.

If they want to use a simple song contest to make political statements, then let the rest of the continent send a contrary one, and reply in a way that offends them most.

Thomas Neuwirth is a very brave man. And I applaud what he has done.
