Usual in-department squabbling, half want go here, the other there.
Company willing to pay £25 towards meal per person, others just want to just take the £25, which ain't going to happen.
Sums up the Christmas spirit nicely :nono:

Wherever I've worked it's been the company pays - sometimes through the nose for it. Last employer it was basically a full wedding bar the ceremony - drinks reception and nibbles, full dinner, speeches, band, more food, DJ.

Current employer is doing a black tie "awards ceremony" with about a hundred quid a head drinks budget, wholesale. This is after food, venue hire, a major charting music act performing and assistance in getting the clobber if needed.

I also worked for the current employer before the previous one; so going back three jobs/two employers ago we had one year with a "Christmas in January" party. Hotel booked out for residents, drinks reception, Christmas dinner, spot prizes - all cash in envelopes, won €200, major local comedian (done Michael McIntyres Roadshow grade), band, DJ, residents bar until the small hours).

The one before that was a puritanical southern US firm that wouldn't pay for drink but would pay for "entertainment" so some fake invoices for DJs were generated, a few staff members including myself did the actually DJing and the alleged superstar DJs money went in to the bar tills.

We sort of have two:

Department one
Where is yours - somewhere cosy
Do you pay for it or does the company pay for it - seniors pay for themselves and juniors
Do you get time off - few hours
And are you looking forward to it or dreading it - looking forward to it, as its a bit of a laugh (well it used to be)

Main one
Where is yours - same as fukken always
Do you pay for it or does the company pay for it - company pays for it
Do you get time off - behave
And are you looking forward to it or dreading it - neutral, never drink as it keeps me from HR the next day. Exit as soon as the music starts.

My company is going to the dogs. Literally, all paid for and other halves as well so a lift home afterwards! Should be a laugh if nothing else. Only a small company, but well looked after by the boss
(cheers, boss)

So you're making your partner go to an event where she'll barely know a soul and she has to stay sober so she can drive you home?

With the rest being bought for you, why not go crazy and get a cab/Uber and let your other half get into the seasonal spirit too?

(* - unless she's teetotal of course)

I work for Government so have never had a free do. I usually go out of obligation, plus everyone else seems to and it would look odd to not. But it is strange. I rarely enjoy it, because these people are my colleagues, not my friends. And everyone seems to go out of a misplaced sense of Christmas spirit.

Just by way of a quick edited highlight...

Two as well. Department one in a local restaurant with a quiz and decent food. Company contributes £30 per head and we pay for the booze. This is just about ok and I’ll go home after a couple of hours while the youngsters carry on.

Second one is the company one which they pay for in some massive flagship venue in Central London. I absolutely hate it. Like the poster above, I have no interest in socialising with work colleagues and can’t stand all the senior managers getting down with the kids on the dance floor.

Also usually involves all the women in the office disappearing all afternoon to “get ready”.

Have been once in 15 years. Never again. I get inverse pleasure knowing I’m going home at the end of the day when virtually everyone else is going to that.

Yep, remember it well.

I was reminded of it a few years ago at another company when we had a new young member of staff who very unfortunately joined a day or two before the Xmas party. First "proper job" and somewhat dazzled by the bright lights of the city got completely rat arsed and failed to turn up the next day.

Quite brilliantly used the excuse that they had ended in bed with another member of staff in a different part of London and couldn't get in.

As I've said - I avoid them.

My worst experience having to re-dress a completely naked colleague and get them on on public transport home. The world has completely changed over the last few years. Gone are the days when you witnessed someone giving someone a ### ### and laugh it off, these days it can technically end up in instant dismissal.

My party is tonight, but as it's my wife's 40th birthday I won't be going. It's a shame as these things are normally good fun and good for team building. I always attend my wife's party.. she works for Ricardo and they hire the ballroom at the Grand. Usually enjoy that

And the poignant signing off...

"Bye. Everyone. Being taken home by securiyty.

See you all at Withdeym"

I am a teacher and we are going to a local bar with a piano player. We are allocated 1 'free' drink each (the chocolate and drinks sale from the staffroom fridge cover this apparently).

The school year over here runs the same as the calendar year and by this time I am thoroughly sick of everyones bullshit so usually go for as long as i can bear it. This year with the atmosphere at work I am not sure I will make it through my 'free' drink.

The Christmas party is a wonderful opportunity to show your work force just how much you value and appreciate them. Our Christmas do shows us exactly that.

I think i need to get another job :D

my do will be next week. the dept leads are ex-party monsters and their PA heads the social committee, so know what they are doing. it'll be at a City pub booked out for the evening with "canapes" (mini burgers, goujons etc usually) and a free bar until the tab of several thousands is hit. as only about 50-60 people turn up the tab often goes very late.
