Steady start. It's very unlikely we can save this test in reality, but a decent fight can only help confidence going into the next test.

It's also encouraging to have (hopefully) found a genuine test opening partner for Cook. In theory, that could be a very strong top 3.

With Cook gone it is going to require a massive performance from others to get anything out of this game

Can the rest bat the last day out for the draw which must be the first aim and getting sufficient runs to push for a win secondary.

Secondary aim a win? 318 runs on the last day on a turning wicket with inconsistent bounce?
It will be a monumental effort to get a draw and will need Root to bat most of the day.

Interesting stat from CricInfo. 2 opening partnerships from Cook/Hameed in the first 2 tests are the 1st/3rd longest (in terms of balls faced) in India.

Was Tavare and Boycott the second ? They had a very long opening partnership in Delhi during the 1981 tour. Seven hours I seem to remember. Gower came in and was out first ball.

Correction: It was a second wicket partnership. Gower was out third ball. Fog of memory.

No chance of a win but a good chance for the Middle Order to show some discipline and get some experience banked vs. top class spin bowling for the future.

I reckon it will be over before Tea but you never know...

25/1 for an England win on Paddypower. India 1/6, the draw 5/1.

I have a ten pound free bet outstanding. Might go for the draw rather than a quick, but small, profit from a bet and lay.
