Just because I'm curious about how these sessions work how do they split people according to 5k/10k times?

Do they have a group of people at 6m/mi 5k and 6.20m/mi 10k times run together or do people just settle on their own target times?

Target times.
20-30 runners are split into two groups. You'll be in top group and head off to other side of track. I stay where I am in the second group. Purely individuals choice of the moment. The session is explained and then it's an immediate set off in sub groups of 4-8+. I just follow along for the first interval and have then joined faster group from then on.

In any week it depends on who has turned up, whether they have just competed the day before or are saving themselves for the coming weekend. Some drop an interval here or there or finish early. You can change group and run alone if you get left behind or are too far in front.

As you lap me you'll be able to use your newly acquired track etiquette and shout "Track" in my ear hole to force me out of the inner lane.

So as much freedom as you want but the chance to run along with a group to push you. Having missed last nights session I did it today on Hove Lawns and it was much harder running along without a group.

I made a discovery earlier on - Bright10 on sunday! Why they keeping it such a secret?! :blush: So my sprinting session at lunch time today was a bit of a gamble. I was planning on going to Lancing and giving it the beans but I'll have to try and be a bit more reserved. I have a Super Egos tussle with [MENTION=18183]big nuts[/MENTION] to consider.

On the subject of "every day's a school day"....

My road shoes are dead and I found myself in a office in Birmingham yesterday that's fairly much next to a specialist running store. Picked up a new pair of Guide ISO - sadly not electric blue :(

Girl in shop once I'd given them a quick blast on their treadmill - "you'll need to tie a runner's loop with those I think"
Me - "er, yes, of course I will......."

So I have just googled said loop and found a youtube video on how to tie your laces :lol:

Truly the internet is a marvellous thing. Now, if I could just learn the alphabet......

Hmm, I think I'll try that - though I've also found just putting the laces straight across and through the extra holes before tying quite effective at reducing heel slip.

I've just been out for four miles (a mile at my planned race pace on Sunday to test the shoes, loop and breathing) and three easy ones. I love Saucony shoes because they fit wide and offer a good balance between speed and support but I also buy them half a size bigger than office shoes or street trainers. As soon as I googled it I understood why the sales girl had said it - and the run proved it. It stopped any heel slip at all and kept the laces nice and tight.

I thought I might be the only one on here NOT doing it but in case you are interested in what I'm on about....

Thank you. I thought it was going to be a load of crap but I found the clip genuinely interesting.

I’ve spent years with the tops of my feet being crushed and blisters on my heels.

Post script. Strava on the phone has recorded my "race pace" mile as 8.01 whereas my watch recorded the lap as 8.11. To get my PB I need to be running around 8.15 m/m. Watch also says I did 4.01 miles while phone says 3.99 so I can see where it gets me faster. I am going to assume my Garmin is correct. There is no way my race pace is 8:00 m/m as much as I'd like it to be - I couldn't even do six miles at that in June.

You did at least 5 miles in the Brighton marathon a couple of years ago :D

I've had the crushed top of feet issue a few times too, especially after my last marathon, so I'll definitely give one of these techniques a go.

I will do the Ironman in Tenby, without any question or shadow of doubt. But it won't be next year. I need to work on my swimming and my intention is to do so, starting before the end of this year. I believe I have the other two elements covered, although I am going to need to work on my cycling distances. I've done a 100 mile cycle previously and I needed to have a nice nap for about a week afterwards! I'd only had my bike for 2 months, admittedly, and I'm considerably more experienced now than I was then - but there's a lot of work to get done.

Also, there's the little matter of the price tag! I can't currently afford to do such a thing. I should be able to do so but I'm afraid not. If only I'd found running 10 years ago, how different my life would be today! But let's deal with reality as it is rather than how I wish it were.

I was only joking really – I know it's a massive committment on many levels. The one thing I would say about the post-bike run is that I think I was mentally strong enough to crack on and do it because I'd done a few marathons (including trails with a lot of walking in). So a) I knew that I could make the distance and b) I also knew what the actual marathon element would be like. There were some properly fit people who were walking up those hills. When was on lap two there were people on their third and fourth laps who were almost spent – some properly fit guys and gals!

You will be surprised at what you can achieve and how the 14/15/16 hours don't actually seem that long. But you're right – for now, stick to the running and carry on with getting bike fit. Another mistake in training I made was not doing enough long rides (70+s). Partly because there weren't many on my schedule, but also because of time constraints and missing a few medium ones.
