ALDI is better than LIDL - it is the WHICH Supermarket of the year for the second year running, which obviously makes mit considerably better than Waitrose.

They also have a fizzy wine (Cremant de Jura) which has been highlighted by one journalist as the best value fizzy available at the moment.

And I am not writing this as a committed customer - I went in to an ALDI for the first time yesterday (Bevois valley, Southampton) and was quite impressed. When we came out, our car was sandwiched between two '63 reg BMW X5's.

I picked up a magnum of Champagne from Aldi for £30.
Not Krug but it was very nice.

Yes. But in case you haven't noticed there's pleb champagne these days; and proper champagne, darling. Don't kid yourself you've procured the latter!

The likes of Most and Lanson have been having it away for years selling very average champagne via their labels to the less knowing consumer. Now that Lidl, Aldi, Asda and Tesco are doing the same at half the price they must be gutted!

The real issue of Waitrose's coffee and newspaper giveaways is what it is doing to other traders. Pretty tough if you run a newsagent. Like banana, bread and milk its just another loss leader for them..

I really like the card. It's not going to put newsagents out of business. You still have to spend a fiver to get a paper.

Waitrose should bring in the arrangement that you need to spend £5 before you qualify for a free newspaper or coffee, in fact i thought that was the case.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
I always thought Waitrose was a myth.

The Independant ?id rather watch paint dry or watch cricket ...pretty much the same thing really.

Can tell you're not a Waitrose customer - it's Independent, not Independant.

I believe it's free coffee, the one on western road has a self service machine. Then it's £5 minimum spend for the free guardian, daily mail or telegraph.

I am aware of that. No means an expert but back in my single days when I had money and a huge ego I used to quaff vintage dom perignon among others in the bar of Quaglinos and other fine establishments.
Having said all that it was not a bad drop, it was better than some of the branded bubbly I have had and walking into a NYE party with a magnum was looking very generous.
I have never had a truly awful Champagne because the quality is protected if it says Champagne on the bottle.
Some of our sparkling whites are better than some champagne, there is a good one from Sussex and Camel Valley in Cornwall has won numerous awards beating top champagne in taste tests.
And to finish, chav champagne is called cava.

I understand the individual words of your post, but put together they make no sense...

Some of our sparkling whites are better than some champagne, there is a good one from Sussex and Camel Valley in Cornwall has won numerous awards beating top champagne in taste tests.

They're also massively overpriced on account of UK tax levels

And to finish, chav champagne is called cava.

And to finish, if its good enough for Spanish people to have on their table on Christmas Day then its plenty good enough for me. And you.
