My best friend is Welsh and has lived in London since his late teens. He supports Wales for rugby and England for football. Alliances are not always straight forward or obvious.

Genuine question; would you have more interest in England if we'd been more successful and / or weren't such a bunch of overpaid fannydancers these days?

But that's the great* thing about international sport: you can't pick your team. You can't just decide to support Germany because they won the first world cup you saw. If you're English you have to support England. To a greater or lesser extent we all chose to support Brighton - even those of us with no blood link to the area. The dynamic of international football is different, you have to have some sort of link.

*Or the worst thing. One or the other.

It's a weird one; England are definitely becoming more watchable, and Italy are capable of the sublime and ridiculous in equal quantity. I keep on thinking this could be a good game to watch until I'm reminded that it's an ENGLAND FRIENDLY.

First GERBRA game since the 7-1 so I'll probably be on that.

Like many, my interest in the national team has waned massively in recent years. The boredom of qualification which used to be really exciting, the pointlessness of friendlies which used to at least seem to have some relevance to proper matches and of course the utter crap that we've been served up at every recent major tournament.

I look at the squad and it depresses me. I look at the manager and it depresses me.

However, I'll probably watch (at least some of) the match tonight and when it comes to the World Cup I will be ALL OVER IT and supporting England with the same optimistic fervour as ever. Until we end up being shite again.

It's just what you do isn't it. If I could help it and just say "nah I don't give a shit" then I probably would, but I can't.
