It's fabulous to watch.
Ok..here's the précis: the ruling, left leaning, party has been voted into third place leaving the government to two crypto fascist parties the northern alliance and the front.
The front are, as far as I can see, ruled by Berlusconi...yes...Berlusconi which means that the kingmakers are anti Brussels and anti immigrant. I think that one of them wants to send 650,000 Muslim refugees back to the war zone and tell the Germans to do one while they're at it.
It's a farce and I'd causing massive aggro in the Junker and Barniere households as Italy prepares to vote on its EU membership in the coming months to stop all the shouting.
DISCLAIMER I am on my way back from a corporate jolly at Selhurst where I disgraced myself.
And I'm pissed.
For further insights....stay tuned. But that will be nonsense too.

I'd say it's more the political equivalent of the TV show Big Brother.
Let's get bona fide Marxists on one side, the progeny of a fascist dictator on the other side, chuck in a narcissistic and thoroughly corrupt billionaire, porn stars, comedians, 3 different types of Mafia, a separatist movement and the Vatican and they have to scrap it out to see who gets to run Italy.
The only rule is that you are only allowed to rule it for up to a year at any one time.
It's a car-crash of a political system, fantastic entertainment but does leave you feeling a bit dirty for enjoying it
To be honest, no, just a bit sad. They have muddled along since the war despite having no credible leadership (apart from the poor ******* who was asssinated: Aldo Moro). It undermines the system. As a social conservative it worries me. As a political socialist it worries me. As a recreational anarchist....it worries me. You only need a small hole in the hull for the whole boat to go down...

Fantastic, fabulous country for so many reasons, except politically, always has been a total mess.
But if I learnt the language I would love to retire and see my days out in Italy, which is possibility as the missus sister is married to an Italian who has property near lake Como and we often discuss the four of us moving out there one day.

Italy survives because this is how they do things. Umberto Eco, Italy's greatest ever writer (in my opinion), acknowledged that Italian politics is a laughing stock but in his opinion it was no more corrupt than most, it was just that all the subterfuge and conniving was played out publicly whereas most other countries managed to do it behind closed doors and this is why they change leaders so often. He was half-convinced that Italian politics was also healthier for it. It's quite an interesting take and certainly made me think differently about it.
He also said that it was impossible to change because Italian people are genetically chaotic. This made them bad politicians but great artists and footballers. His view was that it's better to be chaotic than not. He said that the British too are chaotic. We love fighting and we're world champions at it. It also makes us excel in lots of other creative fields but the downside is that we don't live long, our food is terrible and we make terrible lovers.
His conclusion - he'd rather be an Italian or an Englishman than a German or South African.
A lot of fact in that for sure. Their corruption is in the open. The entire system from politics to law to trying to pay a utility bill is a terrible corrupt mess. But everyone knows that and they get on with it.
Our political system is equally corrupt but we like to attempt the moral high ground as the corruption is hidden more subtly.
What's better? To know that everything is dodgy or to convince yourself that you're living in a democratic society when you're really not? Not sure.....
The "terrible lovers" thing is way off the mark though. My wife lived in Italy for a few years before I met her and her take on Italian blokes (and that of her friends who she lived there with) is that they are all useless in bed and have small dicks. The Italian Stallion myth is just that.

This conclusion from your missus you are shilling here about the small dicked Italian male, what was the size of the population that she tested over the few years she lived there?
For a conclusion that ALL Italian males have small penises and are useless in bed, I would expect she would have taken at least a statistical sampling analysis approach. On that basis I would expect she would have tested at least a couple of hundred males I reckon. Maybe more?

Perhaps you missed two important facts, and/or perhaps you're just following my posts and frothing at the mouth for any opportunity to have a go after you were made to look really silly on another thread. This will continue by the way, because you are silly, and this is a case in point.
Either way, firstly I was replying to the assertion that it's a perception that the British are "terrible lovers" from an Italian point of view. Maybe you didn't get that, or maybe you were in such a rush to be a keyboard warrior (as per) that you ignored that fact.
Secondly you clearly missed the fact that I said "and her friends" so yeah, the sample size was pretty big as she had a lot of friends there and guess what, women talk.
It's quite amusing that you've tried to pick a fight about something so banal and irrelevant. Also amusing that you attempt a childish dig about how I might not trust my wife. You couldn't be more wrong.

My relatives standard of living started going down the pan when they introduced the Euro, everything became more expensive. I can say at one point they had a better standard of living than we did, and we are talking about southern Italy here, not the industrial North. I would like them to get back the Lire,they would would better off.
It's ok. He's a bit dim and I've upset him so I'm not offended.

Why do you think you are not living in a democracy? I could also ask why do you think Italy is not a democracy ? Just because you get outcomes with which you disagree that does not mean they/we are not democracies.

Well when whoever is in charge, nothing actually changes much then it's democracy by name but not in reality. I suppose I feel like a lot of people in that my vote is pretty meaningless these days. A combination of a terrible voting system and awful politicians. I've not felt as disenfranchised from politics ever.
My point was just that in Italy that's out in the open, here not so much.

The other fascist party is not the northern alliance but the Lega Nord or Northern League. They were in a northern alliance in the 90's but have been around as an individual party for at least 50 years. Not happy with the Government being based in Rome the original aim in the 80's was to have the wealthier north break away from Southern Italy as they considered them peasants and called them Africans or Terrones.
