Tales of the Grim Sleeper, and Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, both Nick Broomfield, do the murderer doc thing but with his usual societal slant. I was gripped and then appalled, by them both.

Civilizations is working well so far for me. There was an interesting article which argued that, far more than its predecessor Kenneth Clark's Civilization, the major influence on this series is John Berger's Ways of Seeing, which is also well worth a look (as is the book).
