Dear BG, as I have said repeatedly, we are NOT signing players to be 4th choice. We are signing players who can compete to play in the 1st team. This is not to say the new signing will replace the current top choice, but they will offer genuine competition.

Take your earlier suggestion that we should keep hold of Skalak, and not bother to sign a fourth winger who will compete. The club duly sold Jiri and signed Ali, as I told you they would. The CB situation is similar, but, in fact, now more pressing. We will not get by with a converted fullback, we will not hinder Ben White’s development by keeping him here as backup, and we certainly won’t sign James ****ing Collins! Now, do you get it?

I agree with you that we want to sign players that will hopefully be better than D&D, and will be able to replace them if they are out of the team for any reason. I'm sure this is what is driving our pursuit of Moore. HOWEVER, the transfer window is closing soon and we do need a 4th centreback. So if we can't get Moore or similar over the line, then we are going to have to settle for signing an explicitly 4th choice CB, whether we like it or not

I actually think Moore would turn out to be great value at 10 million.

Crazy times but lets face it, if Dunk has another season like last, this will be his last season with us... then the 10 on Moore to replace him will seem like pennies.

I imagine that is what the club think too. Seems like the Moore situation has all the ingredients to rumble on and on until the last day. (maybe Burn is the backup cheap option if all other avenues fail)
However now that we have have made 3 bids for Moore and he has put in a transfer request I cannot imagine that this is the time we lose interest..I am waiting for the inevitable tweet from Reading saying 'we have reluctantly agreed to sell Moore to Brighton after the clubs came to an agreement' that is how these Transfer windows normally pan out..

It does seem that we are signing a 4th choice centre back just for the sake of it.
They are not going to be better than Dunk or Duffy and probably going to be worse than Balogun.

Wouldn`t it be cheaper and less of a ball ache to just give Ben White the fourth spot?

I know it could affect his development but at what cost to the club.

What sort of Championship player is going to come here to be 4th choice and quite likely not even make the bench.

What happens if one of the other is long term injured, or both out at the same time ? The club need competition as much as back up is needed.

Or the Tinpots are pleased to annouce that Liam Moore will remain with the club, in our campaign for a return to the PL. Liam remains central to our plans.

We need 4, and players want to play in the Premier League and for more money that's why he would be thrilled to come to us.
Also I suspect when he gets a chance he will back himself to keep his spot.
We are 1 bad injury and a suspension away from these guys playing.. we absolutely need 4 good CB when the window is over.

In which position do we have a 4th choice who is anywhere near as good as the 1st choice? All are adequate and capable of doing a job as cover but do not offer competition to the player in the team. Why should CB be any different? Probably the nearest we get is main striker and everybody is moaning about them not being proven to be good enough

'CB' is TWO positions, not one.

If you want to extend that argument, then I'd say Bong, Suttner, Bernardo and Bruno are pretty similar levels, competing for two full back spots.

Murray, Locadia, Andone and Hemed are all competing for ONE spot.

No we're not.....we're singing another because we need real competition and cover for every place
Ben White needs to be playing, CH obviously doesn't think he's PL ready yet
What sort ? One who can probably double his wages by moving

The last time we got a CB who was a great success at League 2 level it worked out fine for us, so no reason it shouldn't be the same for White. If the club want to get someone better/more experienced/more expensive no doubt they will - but it strengthens our bargaining position considerably if we can say yes, we'd like to buy Moore (or whoever) but we are in a position to just walk away if you try and push up the price too much.

It's good to be able to watch this transfer window without too much stress - if the recruitment team decide that White can do a job, I'll be quite happy with that.

Wingers. March is our 4th choice and certainly isn’t substantial worse than the others. Or CM where Kayal is the worst but did a reasonable job back end of last year.

In fact it’s probably easier this year to say what positions that isn’t true for. Attacking midfielder and Goalkeeper. That’s about it.

Not quite as Bong Sutner are specialist left backs Bruno and Schelotto are specialist right backs. the only common competition is Bernardo. who again prefers left back out of choice. Hemed is the example of 4th choice who is not really competing for a spot unless injury and suspension occur.

I agree we will sign a 4th CB, but NOT 4th choice... there is no way we are going to say to Burn (for example)... "please join us as 4th choice CB"... we will say (and mean)... "if you are good enough, you will be picked, we expect you to compete with the CB's already here"...

Yes it`s possible that they might get injured in which case do you really see Dan Burn playing regular PL football, it`s a no from me I`m afraid.
He`s not going to challenge them on ability.

White probably isn`t but neither is Dan Burn.

With our new signings it is very doubtful if Kayal will make the 25 and March is by far the worst of the 4 wide men we have. and I wouldnt expect to see him figure many times only perhaps as a late impact sub.

In which position do we have a 4th choice who is anywhere near as good as the 1st choice?

In literally every position, other than GK, which is understandably a genuine backup situation.

Suttner, Bong & Bernardo.
Bruno & Schelotto.
Stephens, Propper, Kayal, Gross & Bissouma.
Knockaert, Jahanbahksh, Izquierdo & March.
Murray, Locadia, Andone & Hemed.

All of these are either of equal standard, or it's marginal one way or another.

Our entire squad has fantastic depth, with the whole point being that if someone is out - over a long term, not for a single game here or there - we aren't noticeably weaker. Everyone pushes everyone else, because you know if you play poorly, there's a guy waiting to step into your shoes who might not give you another a chance that season. This is evidenced by the fact you will find a champion of each and every one of those players on NSC, and arguments about who is better than another. It's also evidenced by the fact that Barber, Hughton and Winstanley have stated this publicly on multiple occasions.

Answer me this - if you're right, and we only want to sign an 'old head' - a John Terry, Seb Bassong, James Collins, Gary Cahill, Robert Huth - all of whom you've suggested at one point or another - do you genuinely think that if Dunk or Duffy snapped an ACL in training, we'd be happy with them as a replacement for an entire season?

Follow up question - when 99% of people on this thread are saying you're wrong, and showing you why, does it enter your head that you might be wrong? Are you constantly on the wind-up, enjoying fishing for bites, or are you actually so stubborn that you can't even envisage a world where you aren't correct about something?

I'm genuinely interested.
