He would never have come to us and probably no other Championship club, he is Prem proven and an aspiring England international in Euro Championship year, just surprised on the price. So, no, didn't 'escape us'.

This. The 4m transfer fee may appear to be low, but I'm guessing that his wages at QPR were about 4m a year, so he wouldn't have come to us for any less while he still had 6 months left on his contract.

He probably cost Southampton about £12-15 million. Just that the player (and he's representatives) get two thirds of the money instead of the selling team.
