Naylor was just confirming that his story that club were interested in Lingard returning was based on , presumably a source from inside the club, rather than merely speculation.
Obviously the rather late decision to take him on the pre-season tour might mean a deal is going to be harder than the club hoped.

If it were to happen I doubt it was ever going to be before Van Gaal had the chance to look at all his options and finalised his Premier League squad? So after our season starts and if Lingard doesn't make the squad.

Exactly. If Gaal thinks Lingard could help Utd in the next 6 months, of course we're not going to get him. Hopefully Gaal will want him to get a bit more experience and strength first, and we could offer that.
