Starting to look a bit like a flooded council estate , not sure of the house/flat prices down there but those that once had a sea view at the back of the marina must now wonder if the tides in or out .

A very very poor mans Gun Wharf Quay.

Any money spent on the Marina is the absolute definition of throwing good money after bad.

If you say so

The cladding question is a valid one. It's not just council owned blocks of flats which have been retrofitted with cladding which are affected. Lots of new-build blocks incorporate cladding and could have similar issues. I imagine the new blocks at the marina will be investigated and tested. Along with lots of other buildings which are clad- new build flats, hospitals, hotels, office blocks, etc.

I believe John St Police Station was clad a few years ago?

Which is exactly what it should be like - so much potential and so poorly executed.

Exactly, why it cant be like that I don't know. Plenty of shop space for all the outlet stores that are so popular in Portsmouth rather than the odd selection of shit down there now. With the new restaurants, cinema, bowlplex, open air it would be a great venue.

I wanted to rent an office down there a few years ago at the back near the chandlers etc, it had been empty for well over a year and for 6 months I waited to hear from them so I found somewhere else. That office is still empty 3 years on so gives you an idea of the piss poor management.

its heaving down there at weekends. i don't know where this belief the marina is a dead duck comes from. Its really buzzing. even canary wharf has empty units and small businesses that fail still on south quay and the earlier developments.

It's a anathema to some. It's a model village for people who go to Brighton who don't want to be in Brighton. Brighton is 'quirky', 'independent', 'gay', 'different' etc. etc. - all the things the Marina isn't.

I'm not sure what people wanted from the Marina - the best we can get is 'well, not that...'. As you point out, it is popular, it is mildly arresting, it is a nice open space (especially of a warm summer's evening), and it does offer something for the majority, even if it's High Street names rather than independent outlets.

Even though mistakes have been made along the way, it is still an asset to the city, rather than a hindrance. What its not, however, is 'Brighton'.

But it's always compared to Gunwharf, which is FAR superior. It may well be 'busy', but i've never ever seen it anything like as popular as Gunwharf on a weekend.

People travel from all over to visit the shopping outlets - many international groups staying in Brighton spend a day down there shopping in Portsmouth. That (theoretically) could easily be matched at the Marina, there's easily the space.

Around the casino area and the restaurants over looking the boats maybe but the shops underneath and over the road around the Katarina are dead. Probably because they are either unoccupied and full of tat. It is an asset to the city but could be so much better.

If it's anathema to some people, then that's their loss. Never mind. Most people down there are local though. It's very much a local place to go. Brighton is not and never will be 100% 'quirky' or 'different' no matter how many people squeeze their fists and shut their eyes and wish it so. There is nothing wrong with it being humdrum or mainstream, or having parts of the town that are.

It's not just that though.

GWQ is one short stop further on from the centre of Portsmouth by train.
The location is ideal, in the middle of the historic dockyards (TM)
There's a huge variety of restaurants.
An incredibly busy port.
A tower that actually has active changing views.
As well as a huge variety of big brand shops

Compare that to:-

A location not even in the same postcode as Brighton.
Poor public transport links.
Pasta or burgers.
Very little shopping.

Some chain shops are all it needs now really. It's good for restaurants and lovely on a summer evening.

That way the Brighton snobs like TLO can keep their idea of "Brighton" and ignore the monstrosity that is Churchill square
