After the Sussex Triathlon Sunday we are looking to go for some food after.

Any suggestions on a good country pub in/near Battle. The Triathlon is actually in Ashburnham Place if that helps but I think it's just outside Battle?

The Ash Tree Inn in Asburnham itself isn't bad. Within Battle on the high street The Chequers is the best. The Squirrel just outside Battle isn't far from where you are, though I haven't been there myself in years. If you fancy going just the other side of Battle to the east, The Queens Head in Sedlescombe is excellent.

Another vote here for The Squirrel and the Ashtree (drank in there as a yoof).

Bulls Head, Boreham Street. Six miles from Battle. It was a couple of years back that I went there, but best steak and stilton pie ever.

Had lunch at The Queens Head in Sedlescombe a couple of weekends ago. Very nice food and a nice garden to eat it in.

It's a nice pub-I used to own it!

Another vote for the Ash Tree Inn here. You may want to book a table though as it gets busy.

forecast a fine sunny day with low winds no less. hope it goes well.
Ashburnum Pl is picturesque on the lake with Orangery worth visiting for tea and cake! but bit short on the lunches.
for Alfresco lunch would recommend White Hart at Netherfield.. great views south from garden.

In homeward direction Lamb Inn at Wartling (not sure garden) and Red Lion in Hooe has nice walled garden.. though changed hands and quite upmarket now.
Again best to book with all.

Probably a little too far the other way but http://www.queenshead.com/ is worth a look.

So many good pubs on the list but this must be the best - lovely old pub indoors when its not nice out / winter, and the views outside are amazing. Food is so good as well.

Was going to say the Abbey in Battle - much changed from my last visit 10 years ago (used to drink in Battle daily) however for the better especially in terms of food when I ate there a few weeks back it was very nice
