Good thread although I must confess I thought it was a poll to decide once and for all Ian v Iain.

ps) but I voted Botham.

Woosnam. Purely for admitting that during golf tournaments he could never just go to bed after a round like a sensible athlete and just stare at the hotel room ceiling. He always wanted to go to the Bar for the evening. Don't know why but those words have stuck with me...

I can confirm that is true after having a conversation with him when he was worse for wear in a bar before his early tee off time the next morning

This.

Just look at that hair.

I once had a customer who was a very close likeness to him. The company I worked for sponsored the Kevin & Perry premier and he was cheered as we walked along the red carpet as they assumed he was McShane

Stumpy Tim used to have a cat called Ian. Always made me chuckle when people called after him (the cat, not Tim).

Ian is a very rare name now for anyone under 40. When I was born in the late 60s it was in the top ten of the most common birth names in the UK. I had two others in my class at senior school.

In 2017 no baby was given that name.

Strange how names fluctuate so much.

My mate’s dad. Sadly no longer with us. Died in April. He was a lovely bloke. RIP Ian.

And downed that pint of Guinness in one when we won the Ryder Cup. Legend!

Curiously and despite victory, the Ryder Cup Captaincy completely hollowed him out. He couldn't compete for months and I think I am correct in saying picked up a bout of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The Ryder Cup really is the mother of all competitions. Can't Wait. Europe look stronger to me.

I'm an Ian, and I have to say I've always hated my name. It's always struck me as an old man's name and even now in my 40's I'm still considering changing it. I hate my surname too so I'll be taking Mrs Gabba-to-be's surname when we tie the knot.

Some old man's names come back into fashion. Ian won't.

I have been a teacher for 26 years, and have never once taught an Ian.
