There's Moors to holidays than beaches.
Never been so not sure but certainly loved the experience of Marrakech

Aqaba, steeped in history, windsurfing, scuba diving, and the double bonus of won't be expecting to go there, and it will be warmer and drier than Margate

Formentera. Very few Brits, mainly Italians. Es Pujols has some amazing restaurants and a beautiful beach. Certainly not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Very safe and real friendly.
Stayed in old town - hotel jardin de le koutoubia- really nice quality hotel.
Quite traditional and with comfort.
Fir a few nights could not fault and I am well travelled and fussy
I personally wouldn't touch any north African country at the moment.
I’ve been to Toronto, I really liked it.

Definitely avoid Dubai unless of course you want to risk 3 months in jail for accidentally touching someone in a bar and the lovely Dubai rulers deem that offensive behaviour.
My recommendations would be Capri on the Amalfi coast, gorgeous scenery, some lovely hotels, nice restaurants, upscale shopping, very romantic, weather should be around 21-25 degrees in May and as not yet high season at that time in Italy, you will get a deal within your budget.
It's also a classy place to holiday.

As Granada and Capri have been mentioned, I will throw in Cortina. But don't take the missus, get an Escort when you are there.
