On a side note, Wolves become the first side to mathematically play Championship footy next season, too far ahead of the relegation scrap but not enough points for them to overcome Massive in 6th place and also a big GD gap between them and Massive

If we're speaking mathematically, we can't rule out Wolves squeezing in on goal difference. The 23 goals difference will automatically reduce to 13 by virtue of results (wins increase wolves' by at least 1 each of their five games, and losses reduce Wednesday's by at least 1 for every loss). 13 can be reduced further without abnormal results, a a couple of 2-0s, a couple of 3-0s, and Wolves are in.
It is very unlikely, but is still mathematically possible for Wolves to sneak into 6th place.

......and bearing in mind the goal difference, it's almost impossible for Cardiff to catch us - so play-offs are virtually guaranteed as a worst case scenario.Top 7, baby!

I said in another thread but the era where the third-placed team was automatically promoted was actually quite short, only 13 years (1974 - 87). For about fifty or sixty years prior to 1974 it was only the top two. THAT'S how it used to be and what I grew up with! (And no I don't want to go back!)
That's not right either, it used to be just one team from each division who got promoted -one from Div 3 South, one from Div 3 North) It only became two in 1958/59. So it was only for about 15 years that the top two went up

Yes, that's true. I was thinking about Brighton's experiences but you're quite right: top 2 in Div 2, top 1 in the other divisions.
It's before my time but what happened if two northern teams went down? Would one go in Div 3 South or would both go in Div 3 North and one of the more midland North teams go into South?

Speaking of 3D South, we did finish bottom of the entire Football League in 47-48 or 48-49. Does BG still has memories of that season?

No they weren't. The bottom two in division two were always relegated. Teams in the middle, geographically, would get moved between division 3(S) and division 3(N) to keep the numbers even. Coventry City, for example, played in both divisions at various times, as did Mansfield and Port Vale (and probably others).
We're talking about promotion between the top two divisions. Third North and Third South did indeed only have one-up-one-down (which changed to three with divisions three and four) but the First and Second had two-up-two-down.
And if two northern teams went down from division two they'd re-jig the divisional members, so a Midlands club could find themselves in 3N one year and 3S the next . Indeed there used to be a quiz question: what team has played in all six divisions of the football league? (1, 2, 3 and 4, plus 3N and 3S). The answer is Coventry City.

Would that not have been joint bottom along with the team at the bottom of 3D North? Was our goal average better than theirs saving us from the true last spot?

checking it the Northern team that finished bottom were New Brighton with 9 points less than us
