All hail the Albion's proud left-footed heroes, following in the footsteps of the Albion's former proud left-footed U21 international Dodgy Dan Harding

That's very unfair, to suggest that Harding only got picked because he was left footed*.

*it was because Peter Taylor was too lazy to think of anyone else.

Seem to recall one horrible car-crash of a Withdean-era game where our dodgy U21 starlet who might well have played for his country the week before was actually warming up on the touchline while the lesser-talented of the Two Kerry Mayo's filled his slot on the pitch. Strange days indeed. Not to mention seriously crap days.

Taking one poor weekend as your sample, is disingenous.

You don't think Greer gained in confidence from coping with Lewandowski in Warsaw? Or that Forster-Caskey's value is boosted by his U21 caps? Or that Hemed's record of 10 in 16 Internationals is reflected in his?

Anyway - its a pointless argument. If we want to compete at this level we will always need players that are good enough to be called up from time to time. Its an inevitability.

That's true up to a point, but a lot of it is about timing, in particular with friendlies and dead rubbers. Sir Alex Ferguson took a dim view of international football and, consequently, Ryan Giggs never fully committed to Wales the way Bale has, Scholes retired prematurely from the England side to focus on Utd and, arguably, the likes of Rio, Butt, Andy Cole always put United above England. Fergie put club above country and Man Utd profited as a result.

Fergie might have done, but we don't have to. There are many times over the last sixty years that I would have loved to have a few internationals in my Brighton team - even if the best that I could hope for back in the day was an occasional Norn Iron cap for big John Napier!
