Well done.. The timing of your post could not have been better for me as I have just been diagnosed with type 2 on Thursday. This came completely out of the blue and had only been discovered due to a blood test for Cholesterol. Thanks for the inspiration. Its good to know this illness can be reversed.

Well done, and glad for you, (bad joke alert 1) I can't reverse my Daihatsu. (bad joke alert 2) I thought Sugar Diabetes was a Welsh middleweight.

Hi all, especially those with type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 3 and half years ago. 9 months ago on my annual check up the diabetes nurse suggested I start to take statins. I said no I would look for an alternative, I read a lot and came across an article from Newcastle University which said a group of 11 people under medical supervision did 600 calories a day for 12 weeks using a powder similar to Slimfast meal replacements. 8 of the the people reversed their diabetes.

Later I found a 2nd study using the same meal replacement powders, this time Newcastle University increased the calories to 800, but only over 8 weeks, all subjects reversed their diabetes.

I decided to give it go after talking to my GP and started on 1st January 2018, as you can't really do it over Christmas, I did the powders for 3 days and decided it wasn't for me, so I just ate 800 calories per day (well most days) I've lost 2stone 5lbs.

I had my diabetes test yesterday, and today I had a call from my doctor who was really excited to tell me I had reversed the diabetes.

If anyone wants any info to help them or someone they know I'm here to help.

What a day, no diabetes and Albion 10th :lolol:

Bloody well done.
I wish I could make the same claim but you've inspired me to at least try again after the countless failed attempts in the last few years.
I have absolutely no excuse not to. My wife is at end of life stage and doesn't eat or (barely) drink. I've been living on takeaways for the last couple of months - not good!
Thanks for the encouragement. Time to shape up!

My daughter is type 1 and her teachers at school just don't get it. As this is by far the best layman explanation I've ever read I will print it off(with your permission) and will be giving them a copy - kind of reverse homework:lolol:
Thank you.

No problem - Diabetes is a mystery to most, esp those who haven't had to deal with it - and the critical finer points on the difference between 1 are 2 are also a puzzle to the unaware.
I like the notion of reverse homework - but teachers must take on a duty of care to their pupils so helping them understand has got to be a step in the right direction.

Ah, the Libre. It’s a system sort of like a bar code stuck to the skin which allows one to scan for blood sugar level and tell whether it is rising or falling. The pin pricking monitors don’t do this, so it’s a big improvement. Sadly, it’s expensive, and my health authority told me the hoops I’d need to negotiate ( number 1, I have to ask for it!). The hoops continued until I failed so I was told to ask the hospital specialist if I could be made an exception as I only failed on my bmi being a smidgeon too high.....though as an insulin dependent diabetic of 45 years standing, I’ll probably get the equivalent of the Gallic shrug, or computer says no when I get the chance to ask. I’ve reached my three score years and ten, as well, so I’m willing to accept that there are probably needier patients, and continue to be a total prick-er.

Yes, I've had a Libre 2 years now and it is utterly awesome and I could prattle on about it for hours.

I bought it myself as a starter kit for £150 [meter & 2 sensors] and I've had probably 6 sensors over the period - as you rightly say, at £50 a pop for 14 days use - the sensors are expensive. But if you choose not to wear it all the time [as I do - can't afford to] the information you get from 14 days wearing is brilliant. It will enable you to see the effects of carb intake v insulin and what happens during and post exercise. It's also great if you are in a period of stress or illness as the body does very unusual things all of it's own - no doubt you will have experienced this at some point anyway with finger pricking.

Wearing one over Christmas should be law for any diabetic [T1 & T2] ....

Prescribing the Libre has become a postcode lottery - some CCGs have agreed, some have said no, and the majority are undecided. Here's a couple of sites to lobby and/or find out more:

For anyone interested in the Freestyle Libre Starter Pack
Here’s the Diabetes.co.uk page on Libre & the NHS
Here’s the Diabetes.org.uk Flash Glucose Monitoring campaign page
Map showing the Clinical Commissioning Groups [CCG] that are / are not [yet] and those who are still undecided about prescribing FGM
The Telford & Wrekin CCG's policy on Flash Glucose Monitoring systems can be found on the CCG's website: https://www.telfordccg.nhs.uk/your-...ring-systems-commissioning-policy-nov-17/file

Feel free to PM me if there is anything you'd like to ask [diabetes related]

Thats great news. What did you do different to get rid of it?

Yes, [MENTION=12283]GM98[/MENTION], what did you do different? Apart from only eating 800 calories per day, not drinking and losing 2stone 5lbs what did you do different?

Great news, well done.

I didn't know that was possible. So can you now just eat what you like, and you don't have diabetes and aren't at particular risk of getting it?

The only other thing I can think of was for the last 2 weeks the weight was not coming off so I started cycling on my exercise bike. An average of 300 calories per day.

I wouldn't say I missed out on anything whilst on the diet as I just limited the calories. Now I find I'm not eating when I see food. I eat when I need to. A lot less snacks although I did and do still have snacks. I will have to increase the calories to stop me losing more weight.

As for getting it back I think it's a case of acting sensible. Instead of eating a whole large swiss roll in one go I'll probably have a sensible amount.

I agree. While diet will take you so far, you also need to move. An exercise bike is great and I found that using an HIIT session on my bike helped keep the weight loss moving. It only takes 8 minutes a day and you find it hard to argue with yourself that you can't find 8 minutes spare in your day. The Ourpath thing I used includes electronic scales and a fitbit type device. They start you off aiming for 5000 steps a day and then up your rate after a few weeks.

Don't underestimate how much a brisk 20 minute walk at lunchtime can help. My walk around a Burgess Hill industrial estate may not be pretty but it really helped.

Sorry to hear that and best wishes. If you don't mind me asking, I'm alarmed, did you have no symptoms?

I'm not sure if it helps anyone, I had a very small lump under my armpit occasionally, never thought anything of it. Then in December before being diagnosed I was eating more cakes etc at work, then suddenly the lump came bac and increased dramatically it was the size of a golf ball. The doctor took one look and did a blood sugar level. Immediately she said you have diabetes. No other symptoms.

I know with diabetes, some people get tired easily, have you had this, if so, are you less tired, or is it too soon to notice.
