Utter tosh and you know it, that’s an insult to any free thinking person!

For what it’s worth I would pay more for Uber than I would Streamline

I know quite a few very left-wing folk in Brighton and Lewes who only ever use Uber. They detest paying the fares set by the councils for Hackneys/Private Hire.

I struggle with it because of my general dislike of the gig economy, deregulation and the race-to-the-bottom. People should get a decent wage and some security and if that means me paying a bit more for the luxury of a cab ride I’m happy to pay it.

I have now used Uber a couple of times but I think I'll reserve for emergencies. The big advantage in calling for a cab is that you can get an estimated time of arrival and can decline it. With Uber, you don't get an estimated time until after you've booked it and then have to pay a cancellation charge if you decide the wait is too long - as I found out this week.

You shouldn't receive a cancellation charge if you cancel within a certain allotted time. In Chicago it was 5 minutes for Uberx & 2 minutes for Uber pool (the service where you can share a car with other pool users).

Mate, Uber drivers do get a decent wage, many in Brighton are ex local drivers!

As for deregulation well they lost there license last year and had to do a lot of work to get it back!

I got a phone call within a minute of placing the order and when I was told he was more than 20 minutes away, I cancelled. It was well within 5 minutes - there must be a different set of rules in the US

Nope, you just have to claim it.

Here's how :

Open the Uber app.
Tap ☰. ...
Tap Your Trips.
Select the trip you wish to dispute.
Tap Help. ...
Tap I was incorrectly charged a cancellation fee.
Select a reason for cancellation. ...
Tap Submit.

It takes about 30 seconds. It is only £4 though ...... I've saved multiples of that by using Uber. As for 'proper taxis', you do know that all Uber drivers are fully licenced taxi drivers ? Not sure how they aren't proper taxis but you carry on paying excessive fares for an inferiour product. Local taxis are like paying Waitrose prices for Lidl quality while Uber is paying Aldi prices for M&S quality.

It's less of a faff than the Brighton Taxis app which you were posting about recently which, let's be clear, only exists because of Uber. Like it or not, this innovation in the "proper taxis" space has only come about because of Uber's fantastic offering which "proper taxis" needed to react to.

That app is clunky and cumbersome, but it gets the job done. It's like using an app put together by a school kid for a homework project, relative to Uber's slickness.

This is a brilliant article on Uber in all its glory - it really is a company in big trouble. When your business plan depends on squeezing your own employees, it's really not a sustainable one

Taxi drivers will rejoice.

Uber may go the way of MySpace, and Alta Vista, but like those two trial blazers another variant will soon be along. But you can be sure that variant won't be the taxi cab.

That's a very interesting article, thanks for sharing. I knew they didn't make a profit but I had no idea they were losing money like that.

I've heard that in a lot of cities it's comparable (and sometimes cheaper) to get a taxi. This was definitely the case in Boston a couple of months ago. Possibly because it was a busy weekend for the marathon, but you can't make the assumption Uber is going to be the cheapest option.

As that article makes clear, they're really struggling financially and I expect their pricing is no longer so favourable.

I had to get a cab last week. I looked at B&H Cabs and Uber and the taxi was £1.40 cheaper. TBH, I've only used Uber twice - because I had no cash on me. Now that I have the taxi app on my phone, I see no reason to use Uber again

Took me about 30 seconds to find this on the Lewes Council site -
https://www.lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk/licensing-and-registrations/taxi-licensing/taxi-driver-licence/?assetdet39e14ce8-bfa6-4bb1-a5b3-2c92d6811d83=260684&assetdet474890d5-07aa-452e-a4ad-cd274e41de76=260692

"How to apply
Download and complete the forms below. To apply for a driver licence you will also need to:

Hold a full UK DVLA Driving Licence

Pass a Group II Medical examination

Pass a driving proficiency test

Undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

Pass a local area knowledge test"

Disclaimer:- I am not now, never ever have been, nor ever want to be a taxi driver. As far as I am aware, nobody in my family has ever wanted to be one, either

People will claim I’m biased but this is my specialist subject

Predatory pricing at It’s finest, most of the “cheap” rides are subsidised to the tune of 59% by their investors.

They offered us zero % commission to come on board with the plan to use our brand for their own benefit. Less than 20 drivers sold their souls and have since been taken off the system.

Absolute scumbag of a company, illegally plying for hire assisted by George Osbourne, the state and his chronies, the Whetstones.

Such a shame these chancers are going under
