Is it? I'm a fan of the North Terminal myself, and surely easier to plan than when some of their operations were in the north, and some in the south.

I find Egypt to be a fascinating destination. Like anywhere though I suppose, it depends where in the country you visit.
It's crap for regular short haul in my opinion.
1) If you arrive or leave by train you have to get the shuttle to the north.
2) The walk from the terminal building to the gate and vice versa can take around 15 mins.
3) The electronic passport things are always busier.
Arriving at south is a short walk to passport and then you're in and almost at the train station. The north can add 30 mins to your journey which on a 90 min flight is significant.

You obviously haven't visited the place we go to then.
Now that we don't have to take the children any more we bought a small motorhome nearly four years ago (as we wanted to go on holiday with the dogs) and now spend our holidays pottering around Britain. Great fun. We are going to New York for a few days in the summer though as it's my 60th and my daughter's 30th.

York in May and then the east coast of Scotland ie Aberdeen area in July. Visited Iceland this past October and the Mrs was very disappointed.

UK's fine for me, not that I get to do holidays much. Three days in Scotland five years ago was fantastic, though.

Why? My understanding is that EasyJet as the biggest airline at Gatwick wanted (understandably) to have all their flights from one terminal and told Gatwick they wanted the North Terminal - taking Virgin with them - so BA got kicked out into the South. I'm quite happy as I prefer the South and tend to use BA rather than EasyJet.
I'm lumbered with EasyJet.

To be quite honest, I'm not sure that I do necessarily like it any more, or any less, than the south. I fly a lot with Thomson Airways, as I work for TUI, who also own Thomson, who of course fly from North Terminal, so it's as much a form of habit as anything else.
Plus of course, until not so many years ago, the North Terminal was so much quieter, as only British Airways and the odd charter airline were based there.

Living the dream
I drive to Catalonia, Spain each year. Love it. its 1,000 miles and it takes 2 days, stop over in Clermont Ferrand (beautful city), across the Millau Bridge. Saves over £500 on the travel v flights for the 3 of us plus we can take loads more stuff down and have our own car there for driving around.

Drove down to Agde in the south of France a few years ago and stopped over at Clemont Ferrand and did the Milau viaduct the next day. Loved it, you can see the bridge coming from miles away and saved a good hour on the journey when I did it as a kid! Driving in Europe is very exciting, at least for me.

Did you have a nice wander after dinner one evening?.... take in the sights and sounds of the local community.... discover the real Egypt??.... no... because you can't.... it's unsafe anywhere outside the controlled tourist compounds and enclaves... not without an armed escort.

I can quite believe that. Sounds on par with Tunisia then. To be fair Egypt has probably became more unsafe in recent times. You use to be able to explore Cairo and Alexandria without fearing of being kidnapped or attacked.
