Both sides can agree an extension to the negotiating timeframes or failing that, if we both cant agree to extending (it only takes one member of the EU Council to say no, no more extending) we will be Out with no withdrawal agreement in place.
Its all there in the treaty, its not a secret, I cant see the EU diverging from the specifics of the Treaty articles, all their credibility would be shot to pieces if they self initiated treaty change without the procedural input of other member states and all treaties wouldn’t be worth the paper they were written on.
All roads lead to Brexit.

So either extended membership, or some other method of keeping the promise to have no need for a border in Ireland, which means behaving like we are in the customs union and the single market. So we either will be, or be acting as if, we are still members. All roads lead to Brexit, but Brexit does not mean Brexit anymore. Brexit is Blue with Gold Stars.

And the last few weeks of farce, wrangling and political manoeuvring has only been about trying to get a set of proposals within the UK Government. All this time and money wasted trying to get people who are supposedly on the UK's side to agree.

If you think this is a clusterf***, wait until the negotiations with the EU start

Isn't it about time Titanic updated the thread title again. It's been nearly 2 years out of date for a long while and appears that it's now nearly 3 years out. (If, indeed, we do ever leave).

I can understand that it could be a bit of a pain updating the title each and every time there is a further extension, but you did start it :)

I have heard a lot of his sort saying that the backstop is a bad idea, but none of them have come up with a better one.

they did, and it was rejected. they should have simply said we wont enforce a border and be done with it. but they caved to the EU position they "must" have a border and been losing the battle ever since. once you concede possibilities because the opposition say they wont accept them, you lost the bluff game and in this game thats the end.

This has been explained to you numerous times on this thread alone. People take time to explain these things, you seem to understand and then 2 weeks later come back and post the same thing

It's not just an EU position in regards to enforcement of a hard border in Northern Ireland or in Kent. Outside of the EU WTO rules and the Kyoto International Convention on the Simplification and Harmonization of Customs procedures, of which we are signatories, require it.

Gained some rare respect for Boris Johnson over his Irish border comments reported on the BBC today:

Mr Johnson ... claimed the Irish border issue ... had been allowed to dictate "the whole of our agenda".

"It's so small and there are so few firms that actually use that border regularly, it's just beyond belief that we're allowing the tail to wag the dog in this way," he said.

Spot on. If it wasn't for May's government having to grovel to the DUP to remain in power, NI considerations wouldn't be given the time of day.

The whole things a fkin joke. We have remainers trying to disrupt things, and the EU saying no to everything. Are we not allowed to be free of the EU? Yes or No

I wish someone had pointed out before the vote the EU would do what’s best for the EU.

We can of course leave and not agree anything, but we will be well and truly screwed.

But this is what you voted for, you won - get over it

Simple then..........Northern Ireland voted to remain, so give them another referendum: "Do you want to become part of the Republic of Ireland?" Vote yes, and they get want they want re: Europe, and the border problem goes away! Win win............:thumbsup:

Yes and it's perfectly simple. We just need to build what's required in Kent - The M20 widened, The A2 duelled, the lower Thames crossing, all the lorry parks inland somewhere for the customs checks etc. Sort out the 208 crossings on the Irish border as well. Create all the agencies we need to replace The EU ones. Pay them what we owe as per our treaty obligations. Replicate all the international agreements, such as aviation etc, we need to replace The EU ones, employ lots of staff for all Whitehall departments, think UKBF etc, to be able to cope with it all, get The CDS right for HMRC and Settled Status for The Home Office and other jazz like that, make sure everyone's ready to take any economic hit that there might be (think rules of origin problems from the other day) tell them to do one over fishing as all fish will now breed and live in British territorial waters because we rule the waves don't forget, make The EU look after our people in The EU and basically then Robert will be the brother of your aunt and we're all good to go and get those free trade deals going with Pakistan and Turkey etc as the post Brexit sunlit uplands are finally revealed and we can then truly look the rest of the world in the eye because we've got blue passports too.
