Best Way to Find New Music

Moderat are outstanding, maybe my favourite band of the 2010s.

As for new music, a good place to start is the 6 Music Recommends shows - four different DJs, all with a slightly different slant so it covers most of the genres in the alternative sphere. I love catching up on these, I've listened to most of them from the last three years.

Spotify's Discover Weekly and New Release Radar can both throw up some gems- go to Browse, then Discover. In this page you'll also find about 16 recommendations of albums based on what you listen to, another 16 based on what you listen to and what's new, and then (something i really like), recommendations on individual artists you've listened to. Sometimes they'll combine two artists, i.e 'you listened to Moderat and Justice, here's some recommendations', and that can be great.

But, my favourite thing at the moment is the recommendations added at the bottom of playlists- make a playlist, doesn't have to be huge, and then at the bottom Spotify will recommend songs they think fit into this playlist. The list can be refreshed over and over so it's a very quick way of hearing new stuff you might be into. I've got pretty esoteric tastes but i consistently find gems using these tools.

Very much this. The more you use Spotify, the better the recommendations will be too!

I don't have Spotify but can back up what everyone said of Soundcloud (although the search function is not very good IMO) and I would also add Bandcamp. Bandcamp is absolutely brilliant for new music and I love their ethos. Can't be faulted. https://bandcamp.com/

If Radio 6-type music is your thing then another good way of finding new music is getting yourself onto the email list for one of the big 4 UK record shops and checking their websites for new releases and upcoming. I often have a browse through there then straight onto Youtube, Soundcloud or Bandcamp to find a stream of the music to listen to.

Norman Records https://www.normanrecords.com/

Resident Records http://www.resident-music.com/home

Piccadilly Records https://www.piccadillyrecords.com/counter/index.php

Rough Trade Records https://www.roughtrade.com/

There's also tons of music websites: FACT, The 405, Quietus, Pitchfork are all excellent sites that I subscribe to on Twitter and Facebook so get the updates frequently. You'll also find lots more music sites for specific genres. For instance, I'm very into Scandinavian music esp. Icelandic and Swedish and so am always checking out jajajamusic.com

And last but not least NSC is a great source for new music suggestions. I do wonder if Brighton fans have the most eclectic music tastes as I'm always learning of new stuff from recommendations on here and try to repay the favour by posting stuff I've heard on the new albums thread. http://www.northstandchat.com/showthread.php?346717-Albums-Thread-2017

End of year lists from publications and record shops are a good place as well. I completely missed the excellent Floating Points first time round....and only read about them/him when they were number 1 in an end of year poll.

This all might seem over whelming but over time you'll find your favourite sources which match your tastes....and just as importantly which publications and reviewers to ignore.

I was just in my local coffee shop and heard some nice music from the girls iPhone playing over the speakers. Turns out it was SOHN. From the limited exposure it has a floaty Bonobo and Apparat feel to it. Think I'll listen to him today. You can find new stuff everywhere.

Being a bit old school, I have a regular subscription to Uncut magazine and occasionally supplement with Mojo magazine. Both have a free CD. I've just caght up with Mojo July 2017 CD. I really want to like Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit who is included but, like Drive-By Truckers before him, I just don't. But plenty do and he's at The Dome later in the year. I never really fell for all the noise around Black Keys but, the CD includes Shine on Me from Dan Auerbach's solo album and I really like it. I'm not going through every track as each to their own but, much to my surpise, I particularly enjoyed St Etienne with Take It All In. I guess my point is that these magazines and CDs are a good source of new music, often from sources you don't expect to enjoy. Obviously the reviews lead you to other stuff on YouTube, Spotify etc.

I used to subscribe to Mojo but after the millionth article on Floyd, Beatles, Zeppelin, Bob Dylan I ditched it. I even tried to get involved with the Mojo Magazine forum years back too but it was extremely cliquey to the point of hostile and a lot of music snobbery too which I can't be doing with. I don't have a lot of knowledge of 60s/70s bands so once again this is where I've found NSC to be invaluable with some of the best information comes from the likes of yourself and especially Icy Gull whose music threads I always look out for.

The one thing that Mojo do well though are the free CDs and there's a lot of new bands that I discovered through that.

I'm guessing you follow these chaps: https://www.mixcloud.com/paul-homer/

Predominantly ska and old-school reggae and the DJs are proper long-time Brighton fans who also post on here.

I dont. I will now, thanks for the headsup!
I generally use mixcloud for new stuff, as a bit out of the loop reggae wise here.

No worries! These chaps are extremely good. They're playing at the Brighton Skanival on Sunday alongside Rhoda Dakar, Jerry Dammers, Too Many Crooks and more. http://www.theticketsellers.co.uk/tickets/the-brighton-skanival/10043974

They prefer ska this part of the world to reggae per sei. See Polemic in town quite a lot, who I think are from Bratislava. My missus met Dammers back in the day getting him involved in some anti apartheid event. Said he was a very nice guy.

Cheers! I don't know if you saw my post in the albums thread about Nev Cottee but think his new album might be up your street. It's available in Resident or ordering direct from Bandcamp where you can stream the entire album. Especially recommend tracks 4 and 5.

Edit: Here's the link. https://wonderfulsound.bandcamp.com/album/nev-cottee-broken-flowers

It must be the genre because I've never heard a bad word about any of the big names in ska. I've often had chats with Ian at Immediate Clothing and he reckons Pauline Black and Rhoda Dakar are the loveliest people he's ever met.

Have a couple of nice audios of Earl Gateshead in session. Have to dig them out.

Seeing the link....yep...I do follow his shows :) He puts stuff on the reggae page here.

Really? My wife listens to Radio X and just seems full of predictable rock music to me.

I accept that it's changed a tad since the days of XFM, but predictable rock music, I have to disagree.
If you listen to the evening and weekend stuff, it's very different to the midweek menu
