Why has Brighton Pavillion got the only Green MP in the country?

To the best of my knowledge, Lucas is the first MP to win on a FPTP voting system in the world. Which ought to say something. But the key answer is that Pavilion is markedly different to other constituencies in the UK, and has:
-- the most qualified electorate
-- skewed towards the young and, particularly, to university students, as B&H is a small city with two large universities in it
-- Brighton itself has a markedly open, tolerant ethos

You would think given that the colours are always in the same order someone might get one of these polls right :)

Undecided.

It's all about the economy. Get that right then one can spend elsewhere - so please vote blue or yellow. They have done a fine job considering the mess the opposition got us into. The job is only half done. Let them finish it.

Research published this morning suggests that university students' support for the Greens and in particular dear Natalie is fading very badly.

Caroline Lucas to win though.

Are you currently in Lincoln? What's your thoughts on the current situation of McCartney v Rigby?

In respect of the University of Lincoln student base, it's fairly conservative (small c). It is in no way radical, and an SU motion to support the last year's staff strikes were voted down. It has a large and active Conservative society and the politics society has a vast mix of political views, but very little radical views. There's only one active marxist, and a few Greens.

A lecturer did a poll of university students and found Lib Dems had the highest support followed by Labour, who were only 2% of the Tories.

I think the image of lefty students is slowly eroding. I study International Relations and know more students voting Conservative than Labour or Greens. I can only hope the 'great unwashed' image of students is going away.

I'm now undecided. For months I've been saying I intended to vote for Lucas as a personal vote. However no matter how I dress it up it will still be interpreted as a vote for the Greens, and having read their manifesto there is no way I can in all conscience vote for a party who just see the world as a load of unrelated issues and problems where nothing impacts on anything else. Plus their leader is dreadful, and you have to worry about the intellectual calibre of a party if that's the best they can do. And of course when all's said and done they are still the party of smug middle class twats.

I can't believe I'm saying this but as the Big Day approaches I find I'm slowly returning to the Labour fold. Again. Sadly their candidate in Pavilion is a shocking example of everything that is wrong with the modern Labour party, and I can't decide if I should hold my nose and vote for her or vote Socialist Labour.
