and no amount of spurious claims will make our trade with EU disappear either. however the point being made is that the consequence of negative impact to trade occurs to both sides. you may want to focus on the % of the total because that suits your argument, but if no sensible trade deal leads to say 10% reduction in car sales to UK, thats going to have a tangible impact on GDP of major countries in EU. (the reverse is true, but less % because of the net flow to EU)

Every negotiation has someone with the stronger hand. The sooner people realise we are not in box seat the better!

People here seem to think that with our 40 reliant on EU this makes us strong.

Jesus wept. Is there no end to what you'll blame the EU for? Your negotiating team is woefully out of its depth, inept and inadequate and it's no ones fault but yours.

I'm not sure you a close enough to the negotiations to be in a position to comment on either if the teams in the room. That won't be answered until the final deal is thrashed out

The Poles are setting up their own judiciary system which does not fit into the ECJ's system of laws. The EU is slowly dying and we may appear callous in walking away from a dying corpse but we have to be the first to go and face the music whilst the others watch us with envy.

The union project is over folks.

Unfortunately for Leavers, the EU is getting (and will continue to get) stronger. We will get weaker, as we have no credible plan for the future, and many of our key industries are in the course of relocating to continental Europe. No one is envying us - on the contrary, we are a laughing stock. I still find it incredible that so many leaders of the Leave campaign spent so long telling us how awful the EU is, but spent zero time working out a plan for life post-Brexit.

Fortunately I have an Irish grandfather and will be able to rely on an EU passport in the future. I have also saved a reasonable amount, and have a decent proportion of my assets denominated in Euros or Dollars. I can speak French and Spanish, and have a smattering of Italian and German. So, I could obviously just say "sod it, I'm alright Jack". But I'm still a patriotic Brit, and I despair what is happening to our country.

You like to think we are not in the box seat. why do you want it to fail so badly as it will hurt both sides of the argument if that happens. Maybe that is what you want ???

But BMW's family shareholders have said that they are prepared to write off the company's billion pound investment in the UK if that was necessary to preserve the integrity of the EU single market. For years now we've heard from Leavers that the EU will be forced by German carmakers into giving us the deal we want. Clearly, those companies would rather keep hold of the present access arrangements to the British market but, again, Brexit enthusiasts are overstating the strength of our position. Companies such as BMW clearly take the long view.

That is absolutely wrong. It will be impossible to have a deal as good as the one we have. I want us to remain because this will be in the best interests of the economy and people in general - I would argue that this makes me patriotic. If we leave then I want us to secure the best possible detail but this won't be achieved by making absurd claims about why we are so great.

Does anyone really think we will get a better deal with America than the EU could achieve? Better deal with India (who want free movement of people) etc etc. To trade with EU we will need to follow their regulations and given they are 40% of our exports not least because they are geographically close we will follow rules we have no control over.

All this talk of regaining sovereignty, straight bananas and pounds and ounces is but a fart in the wind compared to how this will unfold.

So much negativity. I am constantly amazed how down everyone is about leaving. The European Union is getting weaker not stronger. It is a dying institution and is hated in Poland, Austria, Hungary, Northern Spain, Northern France, Most of Italy and Malta.

What is happening is that the Nation States of Europe are waking up to this lumbering behemoth and bypassing it at every opportunity.

The majority of remoaners are just so bloody glum.

The most dangerous man in Europe is macron the fake centralist bankers bitch. He is determined to act like a king of France and his plan to make the Franco-German alliance the dominate force in Europe is really going to rip Europe to pieces.

Europe was going to ruin us anyway. The EU was determined to bring down our financial clout whether we stayed in or left. Now we have a chance to at least help ourselves a bit more. Britain has worked through much more shit than this in the past.

It's a big world out there and it does not end at the Mediterranean Sea.

If you listen to some of you lot, leaving the EU is going to be the end of the world. No flights, No travel, No food, No jobs, No hope, No chance, No trade, No money.

Get a grip of yourselves or the next twenty five years is going to be one hell of a glumfest.

I don't think Remainers would be so glum if there was the semblance of a plan for what happens next. It is the obvious incompetence of the Brexit leaders which is the most concerning issue. If any Leaver on here can set out clearly how things are going to work post-Brexit, I'm sure many would be very grateful. In fact, if you could then inform the government that would be even better as they plainly haven't a clue.

The Europhile Remoaners on here are the extreme fringe, most people accept we are leaving and just want to get on with the process.

As you point out the EU is hardly in rude health. They are losing their second largest cash cow. The Eurozone crisis is unresolved, migrant crisis - doubling of deaths in the Med, France is still under a state of Emergency .. that's the EU 'getting stronger' apparently

You are getting very hung up on that figure about the trade deficit. Now answer this. If trade stopped between EU and uk then who would be hurt the most.

A) the lot losing 40% of their export market
B) the lot losing 8% of their export market.

That is a simple question.

The 3 countries that the 8% comes from. Are you an economist?

That doesn't really make any sense.

Well, that doesn't surprise me.Let's see if I can break it down for you, sort of an idiot's guide. If you go and live in an EU country, your tax will go to where you have said you would like it to go to,if you can find a job.Is that simple enough for you?The emoji at the finish is waving-try to think about when you have waved to people.Could it mean goodbye?

I'd really appreciate an explanation of what this means. The inverted comma at the beginning suggests that you might be quoting someone else, perhaps a person with sketchy knowledge of English and its word-spacing traditions. Whoever wrote it though, it doesn't make sense. Illumination please.

The inverted comma at the beginning does indeed suggest a quote,as does the one after choice, finishing the quote from some anonymous BBC minion.Possibly the sketchy knowledge of English is acceptable nowadays at the BBC-wouldn't surprise me at all with the ever-falling standards of their programmes.Perhaps you should get your eyesight checked if you couldn't see the end-quote.Have you been a football referee?

Neither of the sides have a plan. We don't know what is going on behind closed doors. The EU has no idea how to help out the "forgotten 4 million'.
The EU has no idea what it wants financially. The EU has no idea how Britain will trade with rest of world once it leaves the customs union. The single market destroys jobs and is a block on purchases outside the EU. It is a corporate cartel and it amazes me that most conservative voters on here want out and most Socialists want to stay in.

I think many Socialists on here just hate Tories more and it clouds their judgements on anything that is perceived to be a tory plan.

Have we as a country really become so dependent on the EU that we can't even trade and deal on our own in the world. If we have then there lies the problem. How did this happen and how was it allowed to happen. It is a disgrace that this country has let the EU creep into our lives so much that we appear to now be an abused wife plucking up the courage to leave her husband but is worried that she can't sustain any semblance of life. It will be a bit tough to start with but longterm we will be free and better off.

What? 8% of EU exports go to the U.K. What is your point about 3 countries? Our 40% goes to all the countries in the EU.

Try having a look at which countries sell to us in large amounts. If you think about it for a while, those countries are also the ones who actually decide what the EU does.I will give you a bit of a clue,as you don't seem very bright. It's not Malta, any Baltic states,Greece,Cyprus,or Czech Republic. Not Hungary,Poland,Belgium,Rumania. Is that enough of a clue?

Oh for the empire hey? Leaving a largest free trade block to negotiate loads of other ones with different rules and regulations will make us free?

We have record employment levels, very low unemployment, since the EU formed record overall growth and yet somehow we still yearn for a past that doesn't actually exist. It is all very odd

And big German companies are saying EU is more important. THEY ACT AS ONE. it really is that simple. It is us who break down by country. They are not nearly as fussed about splitting trade by country as we appear to be.

It's not yearning for Empire it's yearning for the same situation as the vast majority of countries in the world. Our membership of the EU is not 'free'. If we don't like our Government we can vote them out if we don't like the direction the EU is taking what can we do?

And some EU countries have record unemployment and terrible growth so how do you show what bit is down to EU membership?
