Not directly afterwards though (1st letter of the next word), and the fact that FA is an abrieviation so the A is actually two words after the A/an.

Indeed it is - it's not whether the letter is a consonant or vowel as it is written, but is it is pronounced. Hence "F" = "Ef", a vowel sound, "U" = "yu".

So, an FA Cup match, a UEFA cup match. Marvellous.
